Marvel Nemesis: Rise Of The Imperfects

Posted

Yes, the roster was unbalanced. Yes, the graphics were sub-par. Yes, the single-player was a bit meh.

That doesn't tone done how much I think this is a great Marvel game. WAIT... let me finish...

For those of you who don't know or don't care, Marvel Nemesis was a video game made back in 2005 based on, what else, Marvel Comics. The game ties in with a six-issue mini-series of the same name, but the series and the video game itself are VERY different from one another, I assure you that.

One of the highlights of this game are super villians created by the same people who published this game, Electronic Arts: The main anatagonist, Dr. Niles Van Roekel, and his minions, the Imperfects: Brigade, Fault Zone, Hazmat, Johnmy Ohm, Solara, The Wink, and Paragon. Niles and his Imperfects are the focus of the game's story, which is essentially Niles unleashing a sort of "alien invasion" on the world as well as setting his crazed experiments, the Imperfects, loose, and it's up to the Marvel Heroes (and some Villians) to stop them.

Each Imperfect has a nice and well done backstory and interesting powers, and they go around fighting the big names of the Marvel Universe that appear in this game. Among the match ups you'll see are Fault Zone VS The Thing, Johnny Ohm VS Spider Man, Brigade VS Wolverine, and tons more. You'll even see Marvel heroes and villains fight one another, some scenarios coming from some of the heroes falling under the mind-control of Roekel.

Now, this is a beat-up-all style of fighting game. The game tries to invoke the formula of being a superhero to a good extent, giving specific controls to certain heroes and villains, depending on their powers (i.e. Flight for characters like Storm and Iron Man, Wall climbing/crawling for Wolverine and Spider-Man) and, in actual gameplay, gives a fully destructive environment for the player to fight in. You can throw cars and barrels, smash through walls, pick up weapons, and even make things explode.

But, of course, this game isn't perfect. I highlighted the main problems in the opening above. Though, that doesn't really mean this is a bad game. I mean, I for one think this game does a lot right. Like I said before, the Imperfects are well crafted characters with unique stories and powers, the fighting may have problems, but the use of superpowers combined with destructive enviroments was still a fun experience.

Plus, this has to be one of the darkest Marvel games ever made. I can't tell you how afraid I was to play this game as a kid. lol The tones, the visuals, the sound effects, UGH, it all made me want to pee my pants at certain points. Even the soundtrack made me think I was watching a horror movie at certain points.

Anyways, The story itself is surreal enough, PLUS, the insane finishing moves that each character on the roster. I'm not kidding, the heroes and villians get BRUTAL with these moves:

Daredevils's move is literally breaking your arm THEN breaking your neck over his whip.

Wolverine has major roid rage as he literally tears you up with his claws as you spasm on the ground, screaming like a madman all the way.

Both Venom and The Thing do nothing but slam your ass into the ground repeatingly.

Storm basically hurls you around while you get electrocuted way past the limits of man.

And SEVERAL characters end their moves by making their opponents explode, whether it be by combustion or radiation.

See, THESE are the elements I like, and I think this kind of formula can be improved upon in a future Marvel game, whether or not Marvel wants to team up with EA again. There's no plans for a sequel to this game, most likely because it sold for peanuts. Maybe a reboot is in order? With fixed controls, graphics, and some gameplay tweaks? I don't know, I'm just spit balling here.

What do you think? Did you like playing Marvel Nemesis? Do you think we can see another kind of game like this from Marvel, possibly a reboot or a sequel?

The PS2 and Gamecube versions are totes better. I don't blame you. It's one of those "we have to change everything about this game because it's going on a hand-held console" deals.

I remember playing it on the PS2.  Never beaten it.  Even though I did like the games' unique story, characters and gameplay, I overall didn't enjoy it.

i never finished it but I loved it :)

I loved the DS version I don't know why it gets so much hate...

I had the ps2 version

I had the GameCube version

While The Multiplayer was fun and I'll admit that

The single player was just nothing but mindless button mashing

And once I've picked the Awesome Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 game(The sequel was terrible),I never went back to Marvel Nemesis anymore

I loved that game on PS2. Had a hell of a time playing it... with...

friends I used to have.

Shit...

I never had the game, but I remember being oddly fascinated by it. I thought the art for the characters looked cool, and considered getting it. I think other PS2 franchises demanded my dollars at the time.

Oh yeah, MUA1 was tops blooby and--o.o!~ Alright, the f**k? Can you explain to me why the sequel was terrible?  That doesn't make sense to me. In fact, it boggles my mind.

I played the sequel and there is something wrong about the controls that I don't know how to describe properly, and some mechanics either got omitted or altered to be worse

Also the level design wasn't as appealing as MUA1 to me....but that's just my opinion

Ah, I see. I actually thought the controls were an improvement from MUA1. Plus, the team combos were always fun to do. The level design I thought got a big improvement too. I'm pretty sure that overall the engine used in MUA2 was supposed to be a big upgrade from MUA1.

Plus, you can play as Venom and Green Goblin in MUA2. That's an automatic win for me. :3

I would love to see a sequel. This game is awesome.
