I don't usually follow tiers if not at all cuz it means I'm gonna be seeing the same shit over and over again.....I play always as Megaman and he's isn't even in a high tier

My favorite characters are Shulk (duh), Ness, Greninja, Zelda, Duck Hunt, Ludwig, and Robin. I doubt more than at least two of those are top tier (I don't look at tier lists anyway, I think it's dumb that competitive players literally started writing those write out of the gate).

The only sorta top tier character I play is maybe Bowser but that's about it

Also this applies to Pokemon too for me,I stopped following smogon tiers and switched to VGC because I got so bored of seeing the same Rotom-Wash and Talonflame all the time....not to mention that most of my favorites in OU got kicked to ubers like Greninja

I'm just getting into competitive play, but I'm pretty sure that most of my favorite Pokemon aren't super high tier. I mean, my favorite of all time is Feraligatr, which isn't high at all from what I remember. I'm definitely planning on using one of those when I get into competitive battles.

Freakin Pachirisu,a very low tier Pokemon in smogon, dominated last year's VGC Worldchampionship.....in case you remember Sei Jun's Pachirisu

Oh, I definitely remember that. That's one of the things I use to remind myself that tiers don't mean anything, but it all comes down to skill and the amount of time spent learning the best strategies possible. Sei Jun is my favorite competitive player because of how he managed to completely surprise everyone like that. Watching him win actually made me want to enter the VGC at some point.

Tiers between Pokemon and Smash are two different things, dunno why people are comparing them.

Tiers in Smash are by who has most advantage against x characters, despite of it still being a small factor of winning or losing as there's way more variables to factor in. (Skill, timing, stages, and smash being a fighting game.)

Pokemon on the other hand is just who the heck outclasses on from another, even VGC. Unlike Smogon, gimmicks work in VGC as their very fast paced, so an unexpected gimmick can screw over your whole match. Smogon rules? Depends on the tier but don't expect gimmicks to work often as battles can last long. Tiers to an extent are more important to keep x Pokemon from centralizing the meta game. Smash doesn't have that shit going on. (Besides brokennite) It doesn't mean you can't use lower tier mons, it just means it's not broken/OP/over centralizing the tier it's in. And this is coming from someone who took hiatus from battling. Then again I got lazy to go on after MMawile's ban. (Doesn't mean it stopped me completely.)

FYI you guys should look at past XY competitions. It's hilarious to look at the usages because they awfully resemble OU before certain mons were banned. lel

I wouldn't say gimmicks don't work in the context of Smogon (minus them specifically removing stuff like swagger or baton pass chain teams which I personally think is a lot of bullshit, but I digress). Like you can use whatever pokemon you want, and the tiers are moreso based on usage than which pokemon are actually better than the rest minus specific cases like tier bans (which makes it kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy, but there's a lot of UU pokemon that are still viable for OU anyway). The problem is that Smogon teams in this generation tend to be either stall or setup based because of it being Singles, so a lot of gimmicks that require setup can't work when Spikes + Whirlwind roulette is a major strategy.I like going on wifi battles on the games better just because there's less centralization and I see really cool ideas for strategies that I wouldn't see on Smogon singles because of the metagame, but if you like Smogon rules better that's fair enough. But yeah, Smash tiers and Pokemon tiers are very different considering Smash tiers are based on who would win more often if both people had the same skill level and no advantage outside of whichever side the RNG favors, so it's not really usage based as much as Pokemon.

Melee Fox isn't that much better

Also no it's not few characters that cab execute combos

He isn't, but he's not the only character getting the spotlight either.

Yes, Diddy Kong is one of the only characters that can execute true, reliable, applicable combos. Anything else you've heard is either a string, works 10% of the time, or just not easy to use in a actual match.

Like I said before, I don't follow competitive play much, but my friends do. Whenever they play Melee or Project M, it's always the same 4 stages, usually Final Destination. My exposure to competitive play is mostly just Final Destination. :/ There's not much variety when they play, which is why I usually stick to Smash 4 when we all play Smash games. Melee's a good game, but the repetitiveness of every competitive match I've seen has made me stay away from it for a long time.

You haven't followed the competitive scene at all, and I can't blame you if that's your experience.

Your friends don't look like people who actually follow the competitive Melee scene, and just copy what they heard in a circlejerk of "Fox only, Final Destination."

Except most of us are talking about how tiers are stupid and limit choices in the game. I hate tiers because no one actually tries anything new. None of my favorite characters have been considered "high tier" by the Melee fanboys and competitive group, but I still try to learn the best strategies for each one of them and just focus on having fun instead of treating a game in which 4 (or now 8) Nintendo characters all gather and beat the crap out of each other because they feel like it as a super serious thing.

They don't limit choices. Once again, tiers show who can give the person playing them the highest skill ceiling. Fox and Falco are extremely technical, and require a lot of frame perfect inputs. You play them perfectly, and you will win. I'm really sad a lot of people here don't understand why tiers exist. I don't like misinformation spreading around.

There are plenty of people in the scene who try characters besides Fox and Falco. I can list 5 people who are in the top 8 right now who don't main Fox and Falco.

  • Mew2King - Everyone. He's crazy. Mostly Marth and Sheik though.
  • Hungrybox - Jigglypuff
  • AsmA  - Yoshi
  • Pluplue - Samus
  • Armada - Peach

Mind you, I'm not listing people who are being silly or losing tourneys. These people consistently get top 8 with these characters.

Don't group Melee fanbois and the actual competitive scene together. They aren't the same.

The competitive scene finds fun in playing the game seriously. I'm sorry you don't find their way of playing fun, but it's plain wrong to say that playing seriously isn't fun.

More power to you man. Playing who you want to play is nothing wrong.

Sm4sh tiers right now aren't worth anything. Anyone who makes one is ignored by the community right now, because the metagame is still a bit too young right now.

I would like to state this here, if I wasn't clear before.

I don't have anything against people who don't care about the competitive community or play casually.

I do care when people spread misinformation, and I'm just trying to clear up your thoughts on the community.

I have seen some matches here and there. They usually don't seem to be much different from what my friends do.

And they watch tournament matches all the time. They've even gone to a tournament for Smash 4 and Project M. They follow competitive Melee, and they've played the same way ever since they first got into it. This is why I can't even play Melee or Project M anymore, it's just the same thing every single time.

They don't limit choices. Once again, tiers show who can give the person playing them the highest skill ceiling. Fox and Falco are extremely technical, and require a lot of frame perfect inputs. The competitive scene finds fun in playing the game seriously. I'm sorry you don't find their way of playing fun, but it's plain wrong to say that playing seriously isn't fun.

They do limit choices if, as you said, everyone just plays to win money and only uses top tier characters. I'm not saying people only use Fox, either. I'm pointing out that it's rare that people who do well in tournaments use anyone else. I've never heard of a Melee player who uses Ness competitively, for example. And as I said before, my friends in my Smash group are all really into Melee tournaments and follow a lot of the big players. Still haven't heard of a Ness user. I respect the people who do try to make their matches fun to watch by not loading every single fight with the same exact characters that are all at the top of the tier list, but it's still clear that most people don't try anything new with tiers, just what works. Not to mention that, from what I've heard, it's usually just the same exact group of people winning anyway.

Most competitive players I've seen are the "Melee fanbois." There's a reason they didn't think Brawl was even decent until they hacked it to make it essentially a clone of Melee. I bet it won't be long before they start saying Smash 4 isn't good enough for them and give it the Brawl treatment.

I don't see why you need to apologize because I don't enjoy serious play as much as just having fun. Like I said before, this is a game in which Pikachu, Wario, Donkey Kong, and the dog from Duck Hunt all try to knock each other off of platforms. I've never understood why people needed to take it more seriously than that. And an opinion isn't wrong, it's an opinion. If I don't think that being super serious about a game where someone can kill players with a taunt of all things is fun, I don't think it's fun.

I've seen people like Zero (Not that I take him seriously after his pathetic methods of winning the Smash 4 tournament... Admitting that he ran away just to win is sad), who from what I understand are absolutely huge in the competitive scene, make tiers within a month of the game's Japanese release. No one ignored those, people seemed more interested in them than anything else.

Do we need to use the word "casual?" There are a lot of other words that could be used aside from what's essentially become a slur among the gaming community these days.

And I've had enough bad experiences with the community to form my own opinion on them.

I will say that I do occasionally enjoy watching competitive battles, especially when some cool trick is pulled off. However, I don't necessarily like the community. There are exceptions, such as my group of friends who I do play a lot of Smash 4 with, and we still mess around in older Smash games on occasion. However, my exposure to the community outside of them has been mostly "lol dirty casuals playing brawl that game is complete crap no one can enjoy it."

Want my thoughts on the competitive community  I ran into aside from the good sports ones like Mew2King and Zero ....or the Smash fanbase in general?

Most of them are some of the most elitists assholes I've ever met in my entire life who constantly called me a scrub whenever I mention a character I used being not top tier or call me a noob for picking someone like Diddy not because of "wombo combo" but because I like Diddy as a character And

They keep spamming me about how I'm not playing Smash Bros the right way and some of them outright sent me death threats on my emails calling me a c**t cuz I said I love Brawl more than Melee even though I love both to death

I may love Smash Bros as a series but it has, hands down, the worst fanbase I've ever seen for a video game.Even worse than the infamous Sonic fanbase

Never before have I seen a fanbase that takes their games waaaaaaaaaay too seriously in my entire life and feel like they're better than you and should dictate how you play the series

The Street Fighter community, despite the Ken scrubs and some assholes,is much much much much much much more humble and accepting than the Smash fanbase

Heck they fully supported every iteration of Street Fighter 4 despite being defensively played and not as competitive as 3rd Strike or SSF2 Turbo.......while the Smash fanbase kept sucking Melee's dick and wants to see nothing but Melee in EVO heck there is actually some people who only wants Melee in EVO and petitioned for Smash 4 to be removed

Holy crap, I've had bad experiences, but never like that. This is why I usually avoid interacting with the competitive players. I've observed a lot of their arguments and comments, though, and they really anger me.

I'd like to apologize for how generalizing I was in my last post. I didn't mean any harm from it.

To you it may seem like the same thing every single time, but to them, they see much more. If it was the same thing for them every time, they would be just as uninterested as you.

They do limit choices if, as you said, everyone just plays to win money and only uses top tier characters. I'm not saying people only use Fox, either. I'm pointing out that it's rare that people who do well in tournaments use anyone else. I've never heard of a Melee player who uses Ness competitively, for example. Not to mention that, from what I've heard, it's usually just the same exact group of people winning anyway.

Not everyone plays to win money. Sorry I wasn't clear there. A lot of Melee players also play in tourneys for the experience. They do go for the money if they make it that far, but most know they can't do much to the top players right now.

People don't play Ness because he doesn't have a lot of good match ups against characters. His recovery is super easy to gimp. He's not used because of how horrible he is as a character, but because of any tier list.

Tier lists do not dictate what the people choose. If that was the case everyone would be playing Fox.

The same person getting up there isn't boring; they don't play the exact same way every match.

Most competitive players I've seen are the "Melee fanbois." There's a reason they didn't think Brawl was even decent until they hacked it to make it essentially a clone of Melee. I bet it won't be long before they start saying Smash 4 isn't good enough for them and give it the Brawl treatment.

You've exposed yourself to the bad eggs in the community then. There are toxic people in every community, and competitive Melee is no different.

I don't know if you know this, but Brawl had the bigger competitive scene when it came out, and for about 2-3 more years. Many people tried to make others move on to Brawl. Many Melee players were scared for the game because of how much Brawl was taking over. It suddenly died off, and it was due to a snowball of things affecting the Brawl scene including how the game played to them.

At first, Project M started out as a mod to be more like Melee. Now, the M in Project M doesn't stand for anything anymore. They made it their own game.

People are already saying Sm4sh is too defensive, which was one of the major complaints of Brawl. If they played the game thoroughly and came to that conclusion, so be it.

A misinformed opinion is wrong. Opinions aren't automatically deflected from all criticism. I was being vague about that though, and I'll apologize for that. I meant that playing seriously is a valid way of playing for fun. You saying that it isn't fun for you is fine, but it is fun for people who do find it fun. Seriousness and fun are not mutually exclusive.

He played to win. I admit I didn't like what he did, but one incident doesn't let me decide how good a person is. I don't see how this helps your point anyways.

If you are referring to this, he said it was his opinion only, and he even said it's way too soon to tell. People were interested, but not for the reason you're thinking. They were interested because it created discussion about who should be where in the tier list. In this reddit thread, there was a compilation of the tier lists that gotten the most exposure, and by now you can see the tiers have changed dramatically. Even then, they were only first impressions, and weren't taken that seriously.

Do we need to use the word "casual?" There are a lot of other words that could be used aside from what's essentially become a slur among the gaming community these days.

And I've had enough bad experiences with the community to form my own opinion on them.

I didn't mean it as a slur, but okay.

I can't do anything to sway your opinion if you're confident that those people actually represent the community, but I'll still post this for anyone who'd want the other side of the story.

This is absolutely despicable. I hate anyone who would give death threats to a person because of their opinion with a passion. I sincerely hope you the best.

This makes me so angry. Not only are they giving emotional trauma to an innocent person, but they are "representing" the smash community and giving it a bad name.

It's absolutely disgusting that this happens at all, but I really hope you understand they don't make up the real community. I can say with absolute confidence that 100% of the people who would give death threats to people are not part of the smash community. They are all trolls.

I can't comment on the SF community because I'm not involved in it. However, like you said, there are assholes in that community as well.

The people who only wanted Melee at EVO were the ones that were rational. Some points why that was are

  • They didn't expect 2 smash games to be at EVO. Smash already has a bad repuatation in the FGC because they see it as a party game only.
  • Sm4sh is a new game. Many people didn't think one year would be enough for the metagame to evolve. Right now it's still not evolved to its fullest extent yet, but I think it'll be fine by EVO.

Those were the reasons why they only wanted Melee at EVO. If it was possible, both, but if only one, Melee. There might be more, but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

People are getting mad at the fact that any smash game are being at EVO at all.

I won't address that unnecessary part.

I'm curious. Could you guys point me to some instances where the community was toxic if you don't mind?

At first, Project M started out as a mod to be more like Melee. Now, the M in Project M doesn't stand for anything anymore. They made it their own game.

People are already saying Sm4sh is too defensive, which was one of the major complaints of Brawl. If they played the game thoroughly and came to that conclusion, so be it.

Guilty Gear Xrd is even more newer and younger than Smash 4 yet it's still coming to EVO with 0 complains about why the previously competitive Guilty Gear game wasn't here instead of Xrd

As for those who don't want any Smash game at all at EVO they can suck a dick for all I care

A fighting game is a fighting game regardless of it having cute characters or not

You misunderstood. The smash community was worried about the metagame evolution.

People who don't know anything about Sm4sh's metagame couldn't give a damn about it. They would care about how good it looks.

If the metagame looked boring from a spectator's point of view, the game might not make it to the next EVO.

I agree that a fighting game is a fighting game. I hate how toxic the FGC can be to the smash community at times. Hopefully their views on the community will become more accepting.

Probably gonna start importing amiibos I miss out on. Amazon Japan has most amiibo listed for about 1,000-2,000 JPY which roughly equals around 8-16 USD. Villager however....nope, not buying. He's listed at 7700 JPY or 66 USD.

I can get Wave 3 amiibo such as Sonic and Mega Man, for about $10 instead of waiting out the closed pre-orders and possibly paying more than necessary for them.

It's ridiculous how hard it is to get some amiibos. I'm actually worried I won't be able to get a Robin or Lucina amiibo when they come out, because they seem to be selling less of the smaller franchises.

It's gotten so dumb, Sakurai himself can't get some amiibos.

Well at least Lucina might be guaranteed to sell better based on how popular she is after FE Awakening

I got 4 at the Smash launch. xD I got Yoshi, Peach, Pikachu, and Link.

Got Luigi and Pit from wave 2 and have constantly considered getting Zelda specifically for Hyrule Warriors.

Wave 3 I have Toon Link and Shulk on the way. May be getting Mega Man imported as I considered ordering him.

Wave 4 I'll be grabbing Robin, Lucina, Pac-Man, Ness, and Wario. More specifically, everyone besides Charizard.

I'll be grabbing the Toad and Bowser amiibo from Super Mario. I like Bowser's Super Mario amiibo so much more.

While I'm on it though...there's hidden data that suggests scrapped plans for a Rhythm Heaven character, Dr. Mario Stage and a couple other things:

Interesting. I wonder how that character would work.

Maybe they scrapped him because they couldn't figure out how to make him work, like with Excitebike in Melee?

The suggested character is Chorus Men, which would be 3 characters as one, similar to Ice Climbers 2 as one. 3DS hardware probably caused an issue similar to the Ice Climber issue.
