So I've been wanting to be a game designer for a while now. I have plenty of ideas (http://kh13.com/forum/topic/56912-another-game-ideaagain/ http://kh13.com/forum/topic/56789-more-game-ideas-yay/ http://kh13.com/forum/topic/55995-another-game-idea/ http://kh13.com/forum/topic/55214-video-game-idea/) , I write music, I draw fairly well, and I think up stories in my free time.

The thing is though, I have ZERO programming experience. I'm going to be a tenth grader and I'm planning on enrolling in programming this coming year, but I'm still a bit afraid that this lack of programming might hinder me.

So yeah this won't change my dream- I just want an honest opinion from people.
Sooo
yeah.

Game designer? Doubtful. Unless you decide to take programming classes and such. However, programming the game isn't the only thing you do. You could be a story writer.

Or design artist, animator, there are a lot that goes into a game ya know. Don't believe me? Check the credits at the end of every game.

I am doing Engineering Classes this upcoming school year because I'm entering high school and my dad is a teacher up there and we are doing computer design for the engineering class...I believe you could do it...

I'm planning to be a Game Designer.

Obviously some games that can be beaten in a few hours at first, then games that take more than 24.

Just think about what you think would be best at doing.

Well it's not going to be easy but if it's what you REALLY want to do and you put a lot of work and effort into learning how to do things then you could do it. It won't be easy you'll probably have to go to college for it. I mean everybody's got to start from somewhere, right?

Absolutely, if that's what you want to do then do it, the sky's thelimit, if you can see it then reach for it, there are going to be a lot ofhaters on the road, and this is the age where, you gotta start discovering yourself, i'm going into 10th also, and my passion is theatre, Go for It!

What part of game design, specifically?  Just like Javelin says, look at the credits of any game and see how many people are all doing different things.  Programming, art direction, story, etc, are all different aspects to a game that require different skills and processes--and they all need to come together.  Unless you're planning to be the bigwig who oversees it all, which is admirable but a sight set too high at this point in your life, chances are you might just be doing one certain thing when creating a game.

If you're serious about getting into game design, I suggest you start out small and experience for yourself just what goes into making a game.  There are game engines out there like RPG Maker and Game Maker that bypass much of the nitty gritty programming stuff.  Of course, there's still much to learn with those engines, but they're designed in such a way that you don't have to start from rock bottom when creating a game.  Plenty of popular games like Ib have been made on those engines, and they're a good way to get you to see everything: sprites, music, maps, story, and yes, the programming, are all things you can do by yourself.  I suggest you look into that and the indie game community to see what you can do.  You gotta start from somewhere, and this is a viable option for you.

I love programming but programming does not love me, it is ape shit difficult :C you need to have a certain mindset for game design and if you dont have it then you just cant do it sorry....

To everyone who asked:The thing is, I'm not sure WHAT aspect of it I want to delve into- there are so many parts of it that I love and that I could do fairly well if I tried.Thank you for all the feedback! ^^

That's what things like RPG Maker and Game Maker let you do.  They make you in charge of all those aspects, which gives you the chance to explore what you like best.  Games made on those engines are usually solo affairs but multiple people have been known to work on them, but the advantage of having to do everything yourself is that you get exposed to all the important stuff, not just one thing.

I have a many of ideas as well. I have character designs for over a dozen manga and ideas for all of them. I also have ideas involving gaming inventions et cetera;

however, enough about me...

If you truly want to pursue in a career in gaming I would suggest trying to get to know people who have connections and take classes as well as keeping your hopes on the optimum yet also keep in mind the worst that could happen. Who knows you maybe able to, and hey maybe you and I both will get into the gaming business.

Best of luck and hope for well of morrows that are to come.

you've got some lovely ideas in terms of stories and mechanics, I'm sure you'll be able to find where you fit into the world of game design.

You should become a designer. Having good ideas is really a start, in the time being while learning to design still you can be a writer/director/producer/concept artist (if you do art) and other things around those general areas with those good ideas. 10th grade is a decent place to start actually just as long as you take it to college and take it further for a couple more years. But definitely go for it if you're up for the task!

I agree with Ducky's statement about your question. I think if you have enough passion and drive for whatever area of designing you choose that you could become a great game designer. Of course you will have to be self motivated and go to college to do specific coursework, but if it is truly something you love doing I don't think you will have a problem with working hard.  So in the end I think the only person who can answer your question, "Should I be a game designer ?",  is you.

Im going to be completely honest with you im getting into the gaming industry you do not get hired by different companies to write stories hundreds of thousands of people want to do that you have to be working for the company your with for years and even then they probably will not even look at your work. If your an author you can write whatever you want and could send it to different companies again slim chance of them using it but if you have what it takes you never know. If you want to become one of these story writers id recommend taking a game design course and either becoming an artist or a programmer and work your way up and hope for the best its a tough career path

same with music you probably will not get hired on until you send them something they really like

You don't have to be a computer wiz and programmer to work on game development. These days, many games have the budgets of Hollywood movies and lately, they have costed more to make and made more money than movies. Call of Duty, as much as I dislike the games, is a good example of this.

There are a lot of jobs available in the gaming industry, pretty much anyone can take part in it in some way.
