Now I realize what should have been obvious (I'm slow on the uptake, don't hate me)

 

GI quoted Nomura saying that KHII takes place immediately after 3D, yet in the announcement trailer he's slightly, but noticeably, older. How can this be? I only just now realized that the first part of the above scene must be Sora's 16th birthday party. 

 

The party hat and cake should have given it away but whatever, I'm dense. I guess Riku asking "Why are you having a tea party?" kind of threw me off. You'd think he'd remember his best friend's birthday. -_-

Honestly, that sounds like something that would be referenced in the game, had they thought of that. "Aw, c'mon, Riku! You forgot my birthday?"

 

I don't think Sora looks any older at all in the KHIII trailer, though. He's just rendered differently.

They haven't eaten in a while, so it must have a been a feast for feast's sake!

They were celebrating that Riku was gone. But he had to wake up so they covered their tracks.

(and if it was its a bit random since the entire destiny trio have aged before and no firetrucks were given. Though kairi stayed on destiny islands so selphie probably gave her a present or something, and when they were all back on destiny islands I'd be surprised if Rikus 16th went completely unnoticed. Then again we're talking video game birthdays here lmao)
