Hey there everyone, how's it going? You know, I've always thought that a good story, be it told in movies, games, anime's or any other form of media, should have an amazing ending. For the majority of my life, I've seen the conclusions of most stories to be happy endings, and I always thought to myself: "Wow, does this mean the good guys are always guaranteed to win?" But then I see a few movies and animes here and there, and I notice that some have tragic endings, and that made me smile. Don't get me wrong, I love a happy ending, but there are times when I want the bad guy to win, or when I want the hero or heroine to lose everything he or she loves.
This is the reason why I loved the ending of the game The Last Of Us. Don't read any more from here if you haven't played the game, because this is a major spoiler. Okay, so the thing is that Ellie is immune to the Infected virus, so she has the capability of producing a vaccine, but that means the doctors have to kill her by performing surgery to extract the properties of the vaccine from her brain. Joel doesn't allow this to happen, and he kills everyone in there, and he lies to Ellie, telling her that there are more people like her, and that it hadn't done any good. The ending was bittersweet, as it showed a side of Joel that reflected his selfishness, because he got so attached to Ellie that he didn't want to lose her. While the ending may seem happy, the Infected still roam the Earth, and so no cure was made for the virus. So in other words, it wasn't exactly a happy ending.
What I'm trying to say is that sometimes it should be deemed necessary that a bad ending be made. We've seen what happens when the good guys go through all their hardships and they see the fruits of their struggle, but there are times when we should see what happens should they fail and see the world crumble around before them. I may love happy endings, but I always like to have a tragic ending too. I want to know what you all think about this, and I want to ask what type of ending you prefer. Happy, or tragic? Feel free to comment below.
