Story Overview

 

2015, the modern day. Your lives were everything you thought them to be just yesterday. Dreams, aspirations, work, friends. The day-in-day-out routine of modern life. There were things to be counted on every morning you woke up; the place you lived, the people you knew, the person you were. Today that all changed. You didn't wake up in your home, nor your town, nor your country. You woke up in The City, and today your life changed.

 

Skyscrapers dot the landscape in various sizes and shapes, and the crisscross of roads is reminiscent of most of the huge metropolises of the world, but there is something different about The City from any urban area you've ever seen; it's pure white, from the buildings to the roads to the parks, and it's entirely empty. Only a select handful of people appeared in The City this morning, but beyond that there is not a soul in sight. The shops are empty, the buildings abandoned, and the streets eerily quiet. There is however, a dark foreboding in the air, as if  something darker and more malevolent lurks just beneath the chalky pavement; waiting.

 

But you arrival here changed not only your surroundings, but you as well. The City is not simply a stagnant husk, for you have the ability to change it. You have been given, or discovered within yourself, an Ability of Creation. In small ways at first, and soon in greater amounts, you can change The City. Perhaps you have the power to morph bits of building and road into weapons, maybe you can change the streets into a vehicle to move around in, possibly you can form keys and badges to unlock hidden areas. Each Ability of Creation will differ and match the person from whom it derives. And not only can you create from the foundation of the city itself, but as you do, you change its very fabric. Where you build colors spring and spread to nearby buildings and sidewalks. And as you complete certain strange challenges spread around the various districts the effects of your actions bring even more life to the white empty world. Bit by bit you can begin to bring The City to life.

 

And as you all wake you receive a strange message that seems to resound from within your mind itself. It is a woman's voice, but there is an odd element about it you can't seem to pinpoint. Something... wrong you sense as her voice seems to whisper in your ear.

 

"Welcome to this place. The City. You have many questions I am sure, and I am sorry to leave you in such a state of mystery, but some things must be discovered with one's own eyes, and this City holds many truths you must discover. You have gained powers unlike any human has ever known; the ability to shift the very foundation of your reality and build anew from it. You must use this power to bring life to this blank metropolis, district by district, overcoming obstacles and coming to understand many harsh realities. I shall be your guide through this place. My name is Q, and I will show you the way.

 

Welcome to The City."

 

Whatever the reason you are in The City, you have the tools and desire to discover it, and oppose the forces that may seek to destroy you. And you shall have people to fight alongside - and possibly against- as well, and together you may discover the nature of The City, your powers, and the reason you were sent here in the first place.

 

Structure Overview

Skyline is an open-world roleplay about creation, discover, and companionship. Players will be brought into The City in various groups, and from there can consult a world map (which will be provided and constantly updated in the RP thread) and travel to different districts to overcome challenges there to bring The City to life and discover the truth about both the place itself and about themselves. All throughout several mysterious characters may come into play, slowly unraveling the truth as they interact with the players. Players are free to move to various districts in their groups and contest the various challenges at each area to further the story. They can also switch between groups if two happen to come in contact. Overall, as the City will come to life, the story will come to light.

 

Rules

 

-No over-powered abilities; keep your powers reasonable and in check. They can grows as you all get more powerful, but never so much that you can effortlessly overcome another player.

 

-No taking control of other players

 

-No explicit sexual content. Romance is totally fine.

 

-One character per-player (The point of this rule is to force a player to focus on the actions of a single character so all the characters have a lot of relevance)

 

-Only five posts per-person between every updating post I make (basically any time I post as an NPC or detail a challenge) This is just to make sure we don't have rampant over-posting.

 

-Keep out-of-character chat generally relegated to the Signup/Discussion thread to keep the RP thread mostly on-point.

So guys, I feel like this needs mentioning...

 

RPing is a collaboration. It's not a competition, it's not test of skills, it's a story that comes together when everyone contributes and is allowed to contribute. We have people from all different skill levels and all different background here, and we're all here to be part of an awesome story unfolding. Writing, and learning to write in more interesting and compelling ways is a wonderful skill or goal to have, but the fact is that not everyone is going to be quite on the same level as one another. The fact of the matter remains though, that we are telling a story together, and if differences in writing techniques, styles, or backgrounds causes issues where people feel that they can no longer contribute or that their contributions aren't being taken seriously that's not okay.

 

The general rule I carry for godmodding is to never allow your attack to fully connect with another player. It is thus your right as a player to decide when your character is hurt or not. Do not mistake, however, the fact that this also means it is your responsibility to make your character vulnerable. There are very few stories (I would contest there are none) that center around characters without flaws, without issues, or without weakness. If you want you character to be great, that greatness shouldn't just be in their skills; it should be in their depth and development as people. This requires, especially in the context of writing alongside over a dozen other people, that you let your character be hurt at times. I try to respect everyone's autonomy and let them decide when that pain truly comes though or when an attack fully connects, but if a player or players can't fully respect or tolerate the writings of those with whom they collaborate, that's not going to make it easy or fun for anyone to tell this story together. I know its unavoidable that we'll have some strife, but everyone's here to have fun guys, if we all give a little ground then we'll have a better time a group because of it.

pretty much the same old same old here to my work then hahaha you'll get nowhere without some team work people every person on a team has there own specific flaws for themselves the point of a team in something like this is for your team mates to spot your weakness and be there to compensate for them and you do the same for them though doing this the best project possible will emerge 

Duuuuuuuuuuuuddddeee, freaking wicked! There's a really big Cisco division in my area, so I'm familiar with that company

 

What kind of programming skills? All I know is that the division here is in charge of telecommunications and IT.

I'm studying to work in video game programming so I cover a lot of general software application development. I'll be working at their headquarters in California so I'll likely be working less on the networking side and more of the general software engineering side.

Well for reference, im doing web design courses and possibly graphical design and some programming, so yeah.

I'm in danger of needing to drop this RP. My craptop is on the verge of dying and I'm doing everything I can to salvage this thing. Like, it's taking hours to load up the RP page...

I'm super sorry to hear that Riki. If there's anything I can do or change in the RP that could convince you to stay just let me know and I'll be happy to try, I hate feeling that one of my players might feel isolated or disliked by anyone else.

I do thank you, MDS, but it's not an issue with you/the RP itself, just recent events between myself and multiple players. it's very obvious as of late that multiple people don't like that I'm here, and honestly, I'm more for a group enjoyment than anything.Besides, with exam season, going for my licence, working on getting my siatica under control, ect, just means I don't have time for a whole lot of RPing right now anyway, and I wouldn't want the real world stuff to drag down my performance in this bigger RP anyway, and I have two of my own to manage now, too. Thank you for the concern, but its not your fault.I do wish the lot of you a great time in this RP, I hope you enjoy all it has to offer, but I bid you adeu.

In other news, I spent a good bit of my day rereading Evraius and it's sign-ups. That one was really good. Probably the best MDS RP, at least for me.

 

My only concern about this one is that it feels too stretched out. We're all depending on MDS for updates, but at the same time we're in so many different groups that I can only imagine how difficult it must be for him. Perhaps it might be better to make us start getting into larger groups? That way the story becomes more cohesive, more inter-player interaction, and less stress on our lovely GM here.

What I mean in specific is that when I know there are people not enjoying my presence, I leave, as I would rather leave and let others enjoy than stay for my own enjoyment and make the others less happy.

Depending on circumstances, defaulting to leaving isn't a good habit to form; you shouldn't shoot yourself in the foot just so others can enjoy their time in an RP. I'd elaborate more, but I'll leave it at that for now.
