You Know, I Say Final Fantasy IX is Great a LOT

Posted

But I realized today while watching a person stream the game

I don't think much about WHY it is

Lately I've been reminded of just why this is such a spectacular game. So many cool moments, so much good writing, so many memorable characters, amazing world design, fantastic music. This is a real must play, and if you've ben on the fence about trying it I really recommend you knock that fence down and get to this game as soon as possible

fair warning though

the CGI worlds look amazing

the characters do not

It's the highest rated according to metacritic...

it's critically well received, but the release date was bad (and some people suspect the "kiddy" look also drove away fans of FF7 and 8), so it's one of the lower selling mainline FFs

so while it's highly rated (as it should be) in terms of public awareness, even within the FF fanbase, it's underrated

you have to remember that FF7 is where FF got its popularity boom, and gaming as a whole became a lot more popular with the PS1 era and has only ballooned since then

also FF6 has had a bunch of remakes which helped it stay in the public conscious in a much bigger way

Those aren't remakes. PS1 version is a very basic port. GBA version added a dungeon. iOS/Android versions had new sprites and remastered graphics.

Those two are emulations.

they're not emulations. emulating it would make them functionally the SNES version, but they're not. they also have redone translations, new bosses, new magicite, the addition of portraits, and I'm fairly certain the phone version has diagonal movement. The GBA version had to be modified to fit the screen size of the GBA, and the music had to be altered as well. These are definitely more than simple emulations. The Virtual console and PlayStation classic versions are emulations of their respective versions. But the PS1 version definitely isn't running a SNES rom

I've recently been replaying it, and every time I do, it goes up in my top ten.

Re-read my post. I said the Wii, Wii U, 3DS Virtual Console releases are emulations. As is the PSOne Classic.

The PSOne version is a basic port.

The GBA version had a bit done, but nothing major.

The iOS/Android versions are HD remasters.

there is no wii u or 3ds version of FF6

and you have pretty arbitrary definitions for what makes something a port versus a remake (and we've been over the HD remaster thing, it just plain doesn't work that way with 2D. 3D you just up the resolution, it doesn't work like that with 3D. If thy released a 3D game with completely new graphics and functionality, you'd call that a remake, so the same should apply to 2D)

Ito needs to get some studio to remaster it already!

He sure does! Legends don't fade away!

There is in Japan.

If you're using a large amount of data from an older version of the game I consider that a port. The problem is you've got people saying they want "remakes" when what they really want is a "full remake".

Final Fantasy IX is definitely up there as my favourite Final Fantasy game. It is very much one of the most underrated game in the series (not by critics, by fans).
