i dont know how exactly this happened, but this is basically what reversal might say, but i dont know what she might say beyond that

way to the dawn used soul eater as a 'base' similar to how the kingdom key (supposedly known as the keyblade of worlds hearts) used the wodden sword as a base for sora

Precisely. Soul Eater was given to him by Maleficent. And when Riku managed to earn his Keyblade back, it became Way to the Dawn.

Speaking of the sword, I gotta wonder if it was a shoutout to the manga/anime of the same name, since that's Square Enix-owned.

i wouldnt doubt it

As for when it became Way to Dawn it is some time between when you fight him at Land of Dragons and The World that Never Was. The exact time is unknown. I am guessing that its transformation has something to do with Riku choosing the road to dawn. Riku continues to call the weapon Soul Eater after its transformation hinting at it essentially being the same weapon.

Nomura also explains it in on number vi.

It isn't so simple that Maleficent just gave it to him. In the opening video of bbs (shown in a trailer so there are no spoilers) Ven's destati tower shatters and two keyblades (KK and SE) along with an unconcious ven appear out of it. I could explain in further detail but that would mean real spoilers and speculation on very unclear spoilers.

Mere symbolization mate. I will also not sub-correct ye to prevent spoilers, but its just symbolization for the Soul Eater........I cannot say. For spoilers are easy to throw out.
