Fire Emblem Fates is a shameless cash grab

Posted

As a disclaimer, I'm still buying all 3 versions, but this will probably the last fire emblem I get. This isn't because "I hate Dlc" or "waah version split", but rather one story of the game could have possibly gotten butchered for the dlc, and alot of important information is withheld from each story for the 3rd path, which is set up to be the definitive path and possibly make the other games obsolete. Now, let me explain

Nohr (conquest) story is lackluster due to the naivety of the MU and the idiocy of azure. To put in the vaguest way possible, they make a plan to thwart the great evil by essentially doing everything the evil tells them to do, kill countless innocent people along the way, just to make the great evil sit on the throne. This is terrible writing as you're technically the good guy but still did all this evil... when you already know that the evil is evil from the get go. There is no reason why you couldn't relay this information to your allies and let the evil man action speak for itself, then proceed to subvert the evil man power. This would've saved lives by avoiding meaninglessness deaths. There is an entire thread devoted to the story on serenes for those who want an indepth look at the story, for purchasing reasons. I also asked an importer who gave me a very good spoiler free overview with the strength and weaknesses of each story.

Hoshido (Birthright) story is said to be much better, with worst maps overall. Many of the maps are said to be like awakening's, and the objectives are repetitive, being mostly seize and rout, when Nohr has great variety. This detail clearly highlight the contrast between the games: better story, worse gameplay (Hoshido), Worse Story, Better gameplay (Nohr), setting up the third route to be the definitive version of the game. It doesn't help that the third route has the optimal ending where nothing bad happens to likeable characters, and the main antagonist in both stories is only exposed in this route. The greatest offender here is that the online portion of the game is basically pain to win with the dlc, as they have access to the greatest birth of classes, characters and skills.

To summarize the problems

-3rd route is set up to be definitive fire emblem experience, possessing the optimal mix of story and gameplay.

-3rd route is most likely canon, reducing the other games stories to What if scenarios, no irony intended.

-The 3rd route has the biggest lead online, with the biggest variety of classes, skills and kids.

- Important details are left out of each game plot, that only appears in the 3rd story.

This is quite honestly unacceptable, as we're basically having one game broken into 3 parts, plot wise, and one version being obsolete from a gameplay perspective. I hope people read the topic and think wisely about this game, as this can potentially spread to other series if Nintendo find it to work.

I highly disagree

The game's only been released for a week in Japan and it's already being called a cash grab? If there are three stories, of course each will have important points. No one's going to get multiple paths if one is completely pointless. They could have done far worse.

this sounds incredibly petty

also isn't it enough to get three stories, characters, never mind the actual gameplay?

this stream of logic would claim that the Zelda Oracle games are awful cash grabs and they're downright amazing

Anyone could "do worse" my good sir, this line isnt exactly the best when trying to defend a product.

And of course each will have "important" points, but if those points are flawed and badly written youll still get a bad story, and if you are putting a good 40 bucks into a game I prefer having the game that has the best of both worlds.

I cant judge everything about Fates cause I havent played it yet, but if whats said on top is truly what were dealing with, i was right in thinking that splitting the game up would end up ruining the game as a whole, with each game having its own very big problems and the only way to get the most enjoyment out of any game is to get the dlc.

I was against the decision of making two different games from the get-go to be honest, it just doesnt work with something big and complicated as FE.

I would agree that splitting the game was a bad decision, but seeing as how both stories are full-sized games, saying that they're a "shameless cash grab" is a bit of an exaggeration. The game has been released for a week in Japan. I doubt that the fully translated story is that well known yet by those who aren't fluent in Japan. I could list many, many examples of true shameless cash grabs. This isn't one of them.

Either way, this thread was a troll that I somehow didn't notice when I first looked, so debating this is kind of pointless in the end anyway.

Well troll is such a harsh word, if OP believes it's really a cash grab than its not trolling, just a statement you reaaaaaaaaaaaaallllly think is wrong.

Not exactly what I was referring to. I was referring to the fact that the OP just copied and pasted this off of a random GameFAQs thread, and is notorious for making troll threads in the first place.

assuming a Fire Emblem game will be poorly localized isn't exactly a safe bet though, considering they've always been well written
