It Feels Like Nintendo Is Pulling A SEGA

Posted

I mean with Nintendo's newest home console in developement it feels like Nintendo is pulling a SEGA on all the people that bought a Wii U. I really feel like Nintendo is being a little too early on making a next gen system, And yes, I consider the Wii U a next gen game system since it's in competition with the PS4 and Xbox One. But I mean geez, the Wii U isn't even half a decade old yet and Nintendo is already pumping out a new home console. Don't  you think they're announcing this new console a little too early? Sure it's likely to come out in 2017, sure developing consoles take quite a while. But still.

I don't see what's so weird about it. The Wii U came out almost exactly 6 years after the Wii did, and the Wii came out approximately 5 years after the Gamecube; assuming the NX is a completely new console that's supposed to replace the Wii U (which isn't confirmed), it's perfectly on par with the usual timeline Nintendo consoles go by.

they already pulled a Sega by recreating the Dreamcast with modern technology

but yeah, I'm not sure this direction they're heading will work out

luckily they're rich enough that they won't pull a post dreamcast sega for a very long time

And those were good times to release the Wii/GameCube since the other game companies (Sony and Microsoft) were releasing their next gen consoles at that time. So it makes sense. But this time it feels too early since neither Sony or Microsoft are announcing or hinting anything about their next-gen home console. Though I know they're planning them out right now.

I mean, I feel like its pretty common knowledge that Nintendo (and I believe everyone else) begins developing their next console right after the newest one comes out. In that regard, I see nothing wrong. I do believe that they made a mistake announcing this fact, as it makes people think that the NX is coming soon and the Wii U has been written off as a failure by Nintendo. Perhaps they did it to rekindle faith in their consumers (or perhaps their stockholders, which may even be the more likely scenario). Ironically, announcing the NX so early is actually killing faith in a lot of their fans (which in turn results in threads like this) as well as providing even more fuel for the huge band of Nintendo haters.

In my opinion, Nintendo's put themselves between a rock and a hard place. They're alienating the people who did purchase Wii U's, lowering faith in the company's products, and doing nothing to win those self proclaimed "hard core gamers" to their side. This generation of gaming consoles is still young, if Nintendo is going to release a new console only half way into the PS4 and XB1 life cycles, then its going to have to match their power level at the very least, and based on how long after we're likely to see PS5 and XBwhatever, the NX would benefit from beating both PS4 and XB1 in power by a fair margin. Which might not be feasible. Plus, Nintendo is really going to have to push for 3rd party (and definitely western 3rd party) support to an insane degree to get those who have turned their backs to come back.

Nintendo doesn't consider themselves in competition with Sony or Microsoft at all, it makes sense that they wouldn't base their development cycles on either companies plans. Nintendo always does what they want, when they want, and that can unfortunately leave some fans feeling burned sometimes. It's nothing new, though.

Well Nintendo has no choice, the Wii U has bombed. While the 3DS has sold well it's obvious the handheld market is dying in favour of mobile devices. NX really needs to be a hybrid.

Everyone is assuming that the NX is a new home console. This isn't fact as of yet just speculation. We have zero official information about the thing other than it is a dedicated gaming platform.

Just another small note, Nintendo IP is still going somewhat strong (aside from those spinoffs announced this year). They are still making amazing games. :D

Just because the NX is in development doesn't mean it will be released soon. It won't be officially revealed until next E3. The Wii U still has plenty of time.

I actually do remember it being practically confirmed to be a home console by this point. Of course, console creators start planning these things years in advance. It means nothing about the Wii U's status if the NX is being worked on at the moment.

Information regarding NX was revealed during a shareholder meeting, so they didnt really intend to reveal this to the public I believe, but since the internet IS the internet, word got around quite fast. Im sure Nintendo didnt intend to reveal it so soon to the general public but I guess they had to give their shareholders some news in regards to something better being in the works.Still a mistake on their part none of the less.

Anyways, as far as my opinion goes I think at this point the WiiU has run its course. I of course believe were still getting a good year left when it comes to dedicated games coming but I can say that Im pretty satisfied with what I got with my WiiU. All I need is another Splatoon game on whatever NX ends up being and Im sold.

reggie called it a home console, in passing

not a full on confirmation, but pretty glaring, to say the least

I actually didn't know this detail, so thanks for telling me! :)

I stand by the majority of what I said, though. In any event, I'm a fan of quite a few Nintendo games, so I'll probably be getting an NX eventually, whatever it is.

Mr iwata stated that the NX will not be replacing either Wii U or 3DS and that it is a third pillar. I don't think they are going to change their stance and lie to everyone. So the Hybrid idea seems more likely.

The Metroid interview mentioned in that article is the evidence I personally remember.

I actually forgot about that... It's been mentioned as a new home console by a few employees from Nintendo, though.

they said the DS wouldn't replace the GBA

they said the DS wouldn't replace the GBA

It didn't; they still sold GBAs and even came out with a new one, the Micro. Thing is, the DS happened to also be a GBA anyway, so people just naturally moved on. Nintendo didn't replace the GBA, consumers did.

It also might be just easier to refer to it as a home console as opposed to some sort of supplemental hybrid of handheld and console, or whatever it might end up actually being. The NX could be a totally new sort of thing, there might just not be a good name for what it is yet.

That could be the case, also. I guess we'll find out when E3 2016 comes around.

Do you really think the NX is going to sell as well as either of those consoles?Edit: The DS had backwards compatibility as well which allowed it replace the GBA even if they said it wouldn't. People jumped on the DS and it sold very well.

Dude, companies are ALWAYS working on their next new console. These things don't take 3 years to make, they are in the works a year or two before their current console is even released. It's not just Nintendo, ALL companies are always working on new systems about 1.5 generations ahead of where they are currently at. Sony is likely already partway through concepts of a PS5 and I'm sure Microsoft is already coming up with the XBox Two or whatever bs they want to call it. The only thing Nintendo is doing is probably being more forward about their planned next console a bit too early, that's all.

That could be the case, also. I guess we'll find out when E3 2016 comes around.

Pretty much, yeah. It's a little premature for people to assume Nintendo is betraying them, at any rate.

that's the thing. it was backwards compatible. it was intended to replace the GBA, but they said otherwise to get people to be less concerned about buying a GBA in the mean time.

obviously only time will tell how this particular one turns out, but it's not like there's no precedent to be worried

agreed, but that's not really the people's responsibility. Nintendo needs to make them feel that way, not random forumgoers

Fair enough, but we don't have much other than their word to go on at this point. But if it does ultimately replace the Wii U, it will be because of consumers buying it, not because Nintendo says so. I mean Zelda Wii U isn't even out yet, so they must want to keep it going a bit longer.

what I'm more worried about is Zelda U being the last big Wii U game

that's the problem that comes from a replacement

It honestly looks like that though. They said no Metroid, Animal Crossing got a stupid board game, a Galaxy-esque Mario would have been confirmed by now, and I am not even going to mention stuff like Earthbound, F-Zero or whatever IP Nintendo deserted. xD What's left?

Yeah but that doesn't mean that they don't enjoy a little friend competition.
