FINAL FANTASY V is the 5th entry in the series and the final to be directed by series creator, Hironobu Sakaguchi. It was also the first to sell 2 million copies. It featured an all-star development team including Hiroyuki Ito, Yoshinori Kitase, Hideo Minaba and Nobuo Uematsu.
The Super Famicom game was later ported to the PlayStation and Game Boy Advance before receiving a graphic overhaul for iOS & Android by Kazuko Shibuya and Matrix Software which was then later ported to PC.
The story written by Sakaguchi & Kitase has its moments but does not appear to be an epic tale like IV or later entries.
Ito finally took control of the game design for the first time and it shows with a very in-depth Job System for 1992 and the fast paced Active-Time-Battle System.
Uematsu provides another classic score.
The graphic overhaul by Shibuya and Matrix Software has been very controversial and not without reason. The game's graphics are clearly different to the original and while provide a higher resolution also lose some detail, particularly on the characters.
I have not enjoyed the constant back tracking and getting the airship so early just makes things odd. The story isn't that amazing either to my disappointment. I'm also not big on Job System decisions playing such a crucial role in deciding outcomes of battle. If I've just lost a party member due to story reasons I don't want to be forced into using certain methods of completing a battle. As of a result of this game not being that great, the graphic overhaul and my massive backlog I have decided to put this game on indefinite hold.
I really want a full remake of this game and VI outsourced similar to III and IV but at the same time Kitase & Ito are too busy with other projects and they're both needed to do them both right.
