I think my opinion on video games isn't widely accepted

Posted

Both in real life and on here people have sometimes been critical on my opinion that "the story is just as important as the gameplay" because people try to force their opinion on me like it's a fact, not that it happens on here. It happens sometimes, but at the very least. In real life, that's a different story. I know that people don't have to agree with my opinion, but they HAVE to accept it because everybody has opinions, even if it is an unpopular one, like this one. Also I KNOW not all video games have to have a story, because the gameplay is what makes those kind of games from the ground up.

Depends what type of game you're talking about honestly...If it's an FF game, than I would play it for the story more than the gameplay. FF games are known for their great storytelling, but if were talking about Smash. Then no one really cares if there is a campaign or not, right? For me, I like things to be balanced. Everybody has different opinions and we should all get to express how we feel. Even if we have negative stuff to say. It just has to be respectful. I'm kind of drifting from the main subject so I'll stop here. Just express yourself :)

thanks!

some people just don't have the ability to accept an opinion that differs from their own.

Personally I see it as Gameplay>Story>Graphics, because for me I can't enjoy a story if I have to suffer through boring or frustrating gameplay. However if the story is bad but the gameplay is fun and enjoyable it's easier for me to keep playing.

It really depends on the type of game though. RPGs would focus more on story since they typically fall back on gameplay that is common among that genre (i.e. turn based), but a bullet hell shooter would be all about the gameplay. I would say that the graphics are a gray area, considering it's been shown in many games that good graphics don't make a good game. If anything they're just a nice additional bonus to have.

anyways, i don't see why people would get so upset at you for claiming the story is just as important as the gameplay. I don't really see anything wrong with making a statement like that because it's not as if you're insulting video games. Maybe you're just talking to immature people about this topic? Don't feel bad about your opinion though.

Opinions right now are one mindset, if you have a different mindset others will attack you because you're different, regardless if you raise good points.

In the other scope, others will attack someone if they're opinion is weak, very closed minded or nonsense.

You fall in the first perspective.

I agree with for the most part. "Story is just as important as the gameplay" is my opinion as well but only for specific games, for exemple FF, KH, Tales or RPGs in general i think the story should be as important as the gameplay if not more important but games like CoD, Battlefield, SSB and JC the story doesn't really matter. But that's just my opinion but for the most part i think the story should be as important as the gameplay

I can't believe I never thought of it that way. I do believe I fall in the second one. I just feel too lazy to back up my point, that's why I get ambushed by disagreeing people so easily. :(But those people will not change my mind if it's something as simple as my favorite character. I'd just tell myself that I have the right to say "Deal with it."Rock on!

Interesting point of view.  The way I see it, the story is why the game is getting played.  What I mean by that is, just like in the real world, the characters are reacting to the events that happen around them aka the story.  Sora fights the heartless because he ended up with the keyblade.  He travels across the worlds looking for his friends because Density Islands fell to darkness.  Roxas exists because Sora released his own heart in order to free Kairi's.  Without the story, the game goes from something amazing to something that's not worth my time.  But if bad gameplay drives you crazy, then I can see how that would be a factor in whether or not you enjoy the game.

I can respect that, but not everyone will agree with me

To add on to this, this is the irony of the world. We are encouraged to be different, but the minute we start showing it we are attacked. Plus these days, opinions other than the ones widely accepted are immediately attacked. Like how most PC Gamers think their platform is superior.

yea i can understand that and to some extent that's true for most games. Usually what is meant to draw a person in is the story, and then typically the gameplay will compliment the experience. and see thinking like this makes me believe it all depends on the game. Some games will heavily advertise their gameplay. I think Sunset Overdrive did that by trying to show off all the crazy and whacky moves you could do. Other games like JRPGs like to focus on their stories with combat usually being an assumed style (something turn based or in that vein). Then there's the bullet hell shooters with heavy emphasis on gameplay, some platformers like Mario or Donkey Kong have thin stories to connect the levels together, but then platformers like Klonoa have more story to go with great gameplay. It's a mixed bag, really.

in the end i'd say it really comes down to personal preference. What you yourself are looking for in a video game, basically. However I will say that graphics should never be placed higher up in importance than either story or gameplay. You can make a game have the best graphics but if the story is terrible and the gameplay is tedious and unsatisfying then where's the enjoyment? That's just my opinion though.
