Sakurai Famitsu Column: Cloud, Corrin, and Bayonetta

Posted

For Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U, we’ve chosen to add three more fighters. Cloud, from Final Fantasy VII! Corrin, from Fire Emblem Fates (from now on, Fates)! And finally, Bayonetta from Bayonetta 2!You can see specifics in the footage from the special presentation, so instead of going through those details here, I thought I would go into each fighter’s overall design here.

Per the website's request, I'll refrain from quoting the entire page and instead provide a link for your personal perusing pleasure.Although there's no truly game-changing information, I think it's a somewhat interesting read as it provides a bit of insight on why Bayonetta's sexuality was toned down and the factors leading up to Corrin's inclusion -- two topics that have come up a good bit since the Direct.Discuss.

They removed duplicated votes? But I thought they said it was ok to vote for the same character multiple times... T.T"""

"And the character that was the overwhelming favorite among the cast of Final Fantasy was Cloud"

Bahahahaha. Clearly he didn't look at all of Square Enix's polls.

Cloud probably got in because Sakurai was looking at the side of the Internet where FFVII gets more praise than it deserves. Don't get me wrong, I love the game, but the amount of love it gets is ridiculous.

There's rumours it's one of the most returned games ever.

It was 1 vote per IP address. Of course, not many people read the whole Ballot page. They just assumed things and became self-entitled shits.

Whoa whoa whoa, let's not throw names around. Just because people didn't read some large walls of texts and needlessly voted multiple times for the same characters doesn't make them worthy of such hateful words. A lot of them literally thought it was fine and okay.

Ease up, it's in the past now, can't we just move on?

I thought it was pretty obvious that multiple votes wouldn't count. Spamming votes for your character is a pretty desperate move as it is, but it would be dumb if they counted them. Someone could submit a vote for the same character once every five minutes (Not very probable, but I'm giving an example), and that character could "win" solely based on that. It was meant to be a one vote per person type of thing. That's how ballots are.

Well regardless, I don't think it's appropriate to just make assumptions about the people who did multi-vote. Some of them may have just honestly thought there wasn't anything against that and what they were doing was perfectly legitimate. It's not like they were all selfish or desperate a-holes who disregarded anyone else. If anything, it all got filtered through anyway, so it's not like they were disrupting anything either.

I forgot I lived in a world of those who take offense.

Getting back on topic here, I don't believe Cloud was the favorite among the Square Enix polls but regardless, I think it's cool he made it in.

Though, to be honest, I would have preferred either Tidus or Lightning. :P (Preferably Tidus)

That is correct. The recent polls held by Square Enix Japan have Lightning & Yuna on top.

If that's the case, I guess Sakurai was either looking in the wrong polls or deciding who was most popular based on the Internet's reaction to FF.

Or it could be neither and it could be something we don't know about.

Think he was looking at sales. Haha.
