Did you know that KINGDOM HEARTS III did not switch engines because they were not able to get what they wanted with the Luminous Engine? Of course it is part of the reason since Nomura said so in an interview, but Square Enix actually did not want to let the Luminous Engine be used for any games besides FINAL FANTASY XV. According to the french website Final Fantasy World, Julien Merceron, a french technology director who helped with the development of the Luminous Engine, had to apply one of his rules before any other game was made with the technology Luminous provided. The rule states that a first game has to be completed with a certain technology before it can be used for other games. "The first game acts as a test" according to the Final Fantasy World article. Because of that, the Luminous Engine stayed exclusive to FINAL FANTASY XV and thus, games like KINGDOM HEARTS III or FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE moved to the Unreal Engine to pursue their development. Once FINAL FANTASY XV is released,in 2016, more games could be developped with the Luminous engine.

Here's the Final Fantasy World article (if you read french)

To be honest, I think the game looked better with the luminous engine.BUT KH3 is still a solid 18 months+ away from a release, so the graphics are going to improve and possibly look better than the luminous graphics by the time KH3 actually releases.

Luminous look graphically better, but Unreal looked more vibrant. The colours just popped out more, so Unreal is my personal pick. Though both games do look great.

Hmm, well isn't that interesting?  So Final Fantasy XV is the guinea pig of sorts for the Luminous Engine?  How very interesting!  If the engine proves to be a hit with fans, then this means that future games made by Square for consoles might feature this graphical engine!

Well, now I understand why Square made the engine switch for Kingdom Hearts III! :3

Exactly! It makes a lot more sense to me because KH3 looked fine on Luminous (even though the environments are much better now)

Yeah.  But hey, the game looks great in Unreal Engine, so I'm happy!

Now, if we could get a 2017 release window...I'd be so...so happy! X_X

The real reason is because the Osaka team has no experience with the engine. The Engine also isn't really much finished either. They are finishing it alongside finishing FFXV. The Luminous team is literally integrated and became apart of the FFXV team. Since their time is dedicated to that there would be no way to offer help for the engine during KH3 development time. Since they want to get this game out in a reasonable time.

If Nomura were still FFXV director it probably might have been a different story possibily

I liked Luminous  because Sora and the other characters actually looked like themselves... I like Unreal because of vibrant the world looks like...

It really can't be that hard to get the characters to look more like their luminous counterparts can it,but besides that the environments in unreal do look great.Though i wish the shadows and lightning had that soft look the luminous engine had.

Okay. If that's why, then lovely your highness. All that matters is that the title is out next year.

  • 1 month later...

I think another reason could be a PC, apart from being well easier to use.
