My thoughts on story in video games

Featured Replies

To me video games already have the best stories in the entertainment industry. They are longer, allow much side content, and sometimes your actions affect the story. They are awesome!

PS: Tales of Xillia 1 & 2 are pure gold my friend.

Well said. I can tolerate a game if it has a great story to it, but to an extent. I mean if the gameplay is very shitty, I'd much rather watch a lp.

I agree with everything you said. If the game has an interesting story that I might like than I'll keep on playing till the very end. And even if the game has some terrible gameplay I'll still play because the story is interesting and I want to see where it goes.

Honestly, where the hell do you go to find people complaining about this stuff you keep posting about?

i think i could understand why people may think the writing in games is awful. sure if you compare a game released today to a game released 20 years ago the writing may have improved but only within that medium for comparison. it seems that the writers and developers are often not seeing eye to eye when working on a game and this leads to some writing issues, but i guess because games offer so much more than just what writing can provide no one pays it much mind. it's not like a book or movie where, more often than not, the entertainment of the audience hinges on the writing.

games are still a pretty new medium so there's room to grow and improve. i'm sure one issue is that developers try to make their games, an interactive medium, more like a cinematic experience, a non-interactive medium, leading them to try and emulate dialogue that they think you would find in a movie. this mash up of the two mediums could also be an issue because on the one hand they're trying to present the story similar to how a movie would, but on the other hand we're playing a game and the pacing is not the same between the two.

is it even an apt comparison to make between the writing of games and movies?

now of course there are games out there with good writing. Portal 2 comes to mind almost instantly as it feels like a game that really makes use of the medium to tell it's story but that's just my opinion.

basically, i can see where people who feel that way are coming from. the writing in games doesn't bother me, personally, though.

It doesn't bother me either because if the story isn't that good, the gameplay usually makes up for it.

What the hell are these people playing? A lot of the recent games I've played like Bravely Default have a pretty good story. Those people are playing games, where gameplay is a bigger focus than story.
