Hey, newish player to Kingdom Hearts here. I've always been interested in the series but now with the remixes i can finally play them.

So far I've been playing KH2 in normal mode, because I don't have that hands on experience of playing back on the ps2. I stopped at Port Royale to start a critical mode run because the game over all felt a bit easy, even though the absent silhouette of Larxene did kick my butt. Now I'm just getting past the Struggle part of the Roxas intro and I've been struggling a bit, I've had to sit back and play more conservatively, and I just feel like I'm not really ready for what critical has to offer at the moment.

So to a new player, what do you guys recommend? Should I stick with the normal run to get a better feel for the combat or should I just go straight into critical and tough it out.

I'm hoping that this will also help other new players decide what difficulty to play on, seeing as with 2.8 and 3 coming along a lot more people are starting to get into KH in general

First of all, welcome to the site! :D

Since you're new, I definitely recommend just playing through Standard Mode to get a feel of how the gameplay mechanics work. But by all means if you feel up to it you can play through harder modes like Proud and Critical if you so wish. But taking consideration of the fact that you are new to the series, again I recommend Standard. Beginner is a little too easy I reckon, but it's a nice option to just get on with the story. Hope that helps! (:

Peace!

Standard Mode is mostly the most recommended mode for playing KH Games. Stay away from Critical mode for now.

I suggest going through proud mode on the first time if you want a somewhat challenge, or if you want to just enjoy the story, then I suggest beginner mode. Also why are you starting on KH2, instead of one?

I'm playing KH2 instead of 1 because I've seen a lot of playthroughs of 1. Story wise I feel comfortable with KH1, but I do eventually wanna go back and play it later.

Yes!!!  Another Kingdom Hearts fan has entered the fold!  Welcome, brother Leonardo, to the awesome fanbase that is the Kingdom Hearts fanbase!  Trust me, you'll love playing all of these games!  Before you know it, you'll be addicted to the Kingdom Hearts franchise!  Welcome to the best video game series ever, and welcome to this amazing site! :D

So then, as for your difficulty conundrum, since you're still starting out, play in Proud Mode!  Since you said Normal mode is a tad bit too easy for you, then Proud Mode should be the perfect mode for you to play the games in!  Critical Mode is much more difficult, but for series veterans such as myself, Critical has become the norm for us, ya know?  But yeah, since your'e starting out, Proud Mode is just fine!  It's not ridiculously easy, cuz it poses a challenge to you, ya know?  Hopefully this helps! :D

Critical isn't that hard story-wise...but you need to be a quick learner. The early-game is generally the most difficult part because the lower HP bar throws people off and it causes them to ragequit for lack of an obvious fail-safe (for reference, Proud and Critical have the same enemy damage multiplier, ×2). Just learn not to play too recklessly.

Thank you   Ima go through with a proud run, maybe come back later for a critical once I learn the mechanics a bit more. Thanks again!

If Critical is too much, scale back to Proud, which should be doable for you.

Of course, as with many RPGs, if you want to tough it out at that level, the answer is always: grind, grind, grind.

If you have to...play beginner mode to get a feel of the controls and breeze through the game. When you're ready, go for Standard. When you're feeling like a challenge, go for Proud. When you want a Dark Souls experience in Kingdom Hearts, go for Critical. Trust me, the Dusks will kill you in a few hits...I gave up at the twilight thorn boss fight...

You are more than welcome!  I hope you enjoy beating the games! :D
