Food For Thought "How Do You Motivate Yourself?"

Posted

Hey guys! Welcome to this week's Food For Thought discussion, last week's discussion was about the planet and the environment if you'd like to peak at it

http://kh13.com/forum/topic/98035-food-for-thought-why-do-you-think-we-should-take-care-of-the-planet/http://kh13.com/forum/topic/98035-food-for-thought-why-do-you-think-we-should-take-care-of-the-planet/

My personal favourite answers from last week's discussion came from Steventus, Javelin434 and Chuksa :D

For the first time in the history of these discussions (3 weeks!), this one is a request from the lovely

Shimmy!

The topic is;

"How do you motivate yourself so that you can achieve your goals? Why is this method the best for you?"

Motivation is the key to a lot of things, how can one be driven towards a goal without any motivation? Motivation is what drives all human beings to their goals, in our favourite anime/manga our characters have motivations.

Athletes motivate themselves all the time, the prize for first place may come with money and fame and other sorts of materialistic things.

Typical Rules apply!

I want this to be a serious discussion where we can all act maturely. Answers can include references to religious beliefs and teachings from any Holy Book.

You can also include quotes from any person or entertainment medium to help you, oh and you can use pictures as long as they aren't silly memes.

You can challenge people's ideas as long as you are 100% respectful towards their ideas.

My idea;

It sounds cringey but I don't care lol, strange how I can relate to fictional characters more than real people's sucess but I digress. I watch this One Piece AMV

It provides me with a lot of inspiration for everything. I know there will be a pay off eventually, even if it doesn't benefit me, maybe it'll somehow inspire someone else xD

Warning: This is going to be rather sappy.

As someone with self esteem issues and perfectionist tendencies, often my main source of motivation comes from the fear of failure. Thus why I was drawn to this topic as I'm curious to see how others motivate themselves in other healthier ways. I can also relate to Shinobi in the sense that I often use fictional characters to inspire me. Willpower is a trait I vastly admire and if a character demonstrates a lot of it it earns my respect.

So even if things look bad just keep going never give up... don't be a failure because you're worth more....

This made my day. c:

Awesome, another "Food For Thought" topic! I really love these!

And well, this is actually a good question!  As a person who used to have insecurities and self-doubt, I learned to motivate myself thanks to the strong ties with my family and friends, and to God, of course, who gives me the strength I need to keep pushing forward every day, ya know?

A lot of times, I still find myself doubting about how I'll end up in life.  Sometimes I just wonder if things will go the way I want or not.  I mean, obviously things are never going to go my way 100 percent of the time, but I'd like to believe that I'll be able to accomplish most of the things I want out of life, ya know?  I want to be able to get into voice acting, and I'm also a lover of drawing, and would like to write novels!  There's so many places I'd love to see in this world, like New Zealand! (One, because it's a gorgeous country, and two, because The Lord Of The Rings films were filmed there, hence why I think New Zealand is so beautiful! :3)  I want to get married, raise a family, and well, what motivates me to keep pushing forward in life to obtain these things I want is by being true to myself and doing my absolute best every day!

I also get my motivation from music, as there are songs that can be really inspiring or can just simply pump me up, ya know?  Movies and anime and video game characters can also motivate me greatly, as the way the characters overcome their ordeals to push forward really speaks to me, ya know? In the end, I draw inspiration from many different sources, and that, in turn, helps me be the happy-go-lucky person I am, ya know?

For those that want motivation, here's something for you!  Your life is worth more than you know!  You are special, and you can go the distance if you set your heart to it!  No matter what the obstacles, no matter what the naysayers may say, you just keep pushing forward! Don't let anyone bring you down, and most of all, don't bring yourself down!  Learn to love yourself, flaws and all, and you'll be all the happier for it!  God bless all of you! :D

The weirdest things can motivate me. For example, the weather. If it's cloudy and gloomy, I feel depressed and unmotivated, but if it's sunny, I'm happy and motivated. I guess my mood is directly proportional to the weather xD

Another thing that motivates me is my goals. As someone studying engineering, I need a lot of motivation due to the difficulty of the course and I plan to do a lot once I graduate. Knowing that I need these skills for my goals is another thing that motivate me. Focus on the present to build a better future.

There are a few things that motivate me, depending also on the goal itself, too.

Fictional things motivate me the most when it comes to fun and thrilling goals. I feel like I've already talked about this before, though; Ya know, Veemon & Greninja, etc. I won't bore you all with the details again. xD

When it comes to a personal goal, I think about the people who I hope to help even more. Whether it's improving my drawing skills or building my upper body strength, I picture in my mind how my skills could be helpful to a friend, or how God can work in my life through the skills and abilities he gave me.

Now, schoolwork, no way. It's nearly impossible to motivate myself to do all my schoolwork! Even telling myself about how my grades affect my future doesn't help. xD Believe me, the only way I would feel motivated to do more schoolwork is if there was a girl who was counting on me to get better grades. I'll admit this, I don't get motivated to do something if I don't feel like it's exciting. Math is pretty fun, but History and Language Arts? You'll have to make the books I read be about adventures and action if you want me to truly care about the material being taught.

Want the simple version?

Kindness is what motivates me.

Rock on!

You're right indeed pal,  no one is perfect, what's the fun in being perfect?

I'm like you , I have some self esteem issues too. I think everyone does deep down, everyone always wants to be someone else or have a trait that's not their own. I'm currently trying to get myself into shape as a way to overcome my self doubts. I'd like to strengthen the inside by strengthening the outside.

Me? Motivate myself? Ha. I don't..at all whatsoever. Motivation is not my thing.

This is for people like @Shimmy and I and anyone who struggles with self esteem issues. Sorry if I'm going off topic here (On my own thread lol)

Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

A lot us see another person's photo and say

"Damn, I wish my life was like Bob's."

Or

"I wish I could hang out with that group of people! They seem to be having a blast at that party"

Reality- Bob's life sucks, Bob's girlfriend is about to leave him and he's up to his eyeballs in debt.

Reality-That party? Yeah it sucked and everyone wanted to go home, Steve and Tracey argued the whole night.

Social media captures the highlights of someone's life, it captures all the good parts that they want to show off to people. No one wants you to see their worst moments. People (including myself) often feel insecure when they see all these photos of people that seem to have great lives.

The couple you thought had a perfect relationship? Nope. he's always at work so she falls in love with the neighbor. They just happened to take a few selfies that made everything look amazing.

Social media is an ILLUSION. Don't be depressed when you see all these perfect lives on facebook or instagram, because there's something bad going wrong in everyone's life, you just cannot see it.

As the popular quote goes

"Don't compare your behind the scenes with someone else's highlight reel".

Exactly!  It's from our flaws and mistakes that we learn to become better people, therefore motivating us to be the best we can be, ya know? :)

Sorry I'm still sort of new here and don't know how to quote specific parts of the post without making it go all sad face, but I so agree with the last part. In fact social media annoys me for this exact reason. You see I'm a guy who has always looked for the truths of any situation. And with that, I want to know the truth of the people I talk to. I don't want to only see the good stuff that you share on Facebook and post on the internet, I want to know that you're feeling down and thinking your goals are a million miles away and you'll never get there. Because that's how we can connect and help each other grow. I feel like social media and "likes" and stuff has closed people off from each other. And that's not cool.

Anyway, just wanted to get that side note off. I know it was a bit off topic but I'm going to be a school kid and use the "Well everyone else was doing it." excuse.

So what do I to motivate myself? Well my primary source was always music. I listen to an Australian hip hop group called Bliss N Eso, some of you may have heard of them. Some of the lyrics in their songs have opened my eyes up to how great life can be, if we want it to be.

Another thing is that, last year I went sky diving. It was on my bucket list for a while and people were like "Aren't you afraid?" and I realised and answered "You know what I'm scared of? Regret. I'm more scared I will grow up old and bitter with regrets than I am of taking chances while I can." I mean can you imagine a worse fate than being old, taking your last breaths and living your last days on Earth with regret and feeling bad about all the things you never did? I can't imagine a worse feeling than that, physical or otherwise.

Another thing I realised when I was up in the clouds falling towards the ground was "Wow everything looks really small" because guess what? Everything is small. We tend to blow things way out of proportion. There's always someone who had bigger ambitions than you, who sacrificed more for their goals than you etc. Whatever hill you have had to climb or are yet to climb up in life, there's a bigger one somewhere. In the grand scheme of everything, the Earth is a tiny pale blue dot and people go to war to claim just a tiny fragment of it... Well done, humans.

Always look at the bigger picture, the big things we think are in front of us are actually not so big when you consider the Universe, let alone other universes that may or may not have even been discovered yet. Is that girl breaking up with you really that bad when there are actual real tragedies happening in the World? That doesn't mean you don't get to be sad as well of course, feeling your emotions is actually healthy. But its still something to think about when you're in a "Woe is me" mood.

There is no reason whatsoever why you can not chase your dreams in life, a failure along the way is tiny and people will very quickly move on from it and talk about what was on TV last night instead. Let them. You'll be too busy going for your goals to have the time to listen to them anyway.

That's a good question, there's a few methods come to mind but my big one recently is when im in the face of adversity, instead of giving into fear and hesitation I tell myself to do the thing, and then i do the thing, regardless of how nervous i am, or how much i think i could firetruck up i take a deep breath and remind myself whatever happens its not the end of the world.
