Why FF7 Remake Shouldn't be Action Based

Posted

WATCH the WHOLE video before replying.

Here's the gist

KH is barely popular, 21 million sales in total right? It's the 79th best selling ARPG, FF has always been a turn based series and it's the 5th best selling franchise ever, ARPG is not the new trendy thing like everyone thinks it is. Turn based is still alive, look at Persona.

Why should square have to cater to fans who haven't even stuck with the franchise and have only hopped on the bandwagon of FF because FF15 is an ARPG? Turn based is not dead, don't be ignorant. Just because Nomura is directing the game doesn't mean it's an ARPG.

I knew we would have this kind of discussion since the very day rumours about the remake surfaced...

Sorry. But I stopped in the first minute of the video. It started awfully. The guy from the video believes that the game should be turn based because he played the first Final Fantasy games? Well, I played the first games too and I love the franchise but it's no problem for me if this game is an ARPG. Times have changed. The kids that played the game in the past are adults now and most of them do not play games anymore. Square isn't stupid. They won't make a game that has appeal just for a small group of people that played FFVII in the past and still play games untill today. It has to appeal to brand new players and this audience wants something more action oriented.

And about Persona 5... Well, the selling numbers are there to prove. Persona is good! A master piece! But you cannot compare it to FF because it has a different premise, style and ''universe".

"Turn based isn't dead" it's true but it's not living just as action based. Comparing Kingdom Hearts with Final Fantasy is very unfair. We have Final Fantasy since SNES was new gen. We had the first Kingdom Hearts game in the PS2 era. Kingdom Heartss franchise doesn't have half of the number of games that FF has.

The truth is. We can complain, cry out and discuss a lot but at the end of the day we have to remember that's all about the money. There's no such a thing as ''making games for fans". They want money. They want profit. So they look to what is selling out there and produce something close to it. We should be thankful because at least Square will do a nice job.

In Final Fantasy VII Advent Children they wanted to do something that could never be done in the game. Now with the recent improvements to harware and software, they want the remake to be as flashy and fast-pased as the movie. That simply can't be done with turn-based. No matter what improvments are made, turn based will always limit the speed of battle because you have to wait your turn. And what would be the point of spending who knows how much money remaking the game to current industry standards only to have it be a 1:1 copy of the same game from 20 years ago with pretty graphics? Like Nomura said, you'll always have the original. "Go play that". Let this be it's own thing.

because fast paced action games sell to the masses. there's a low barrier of entry for newcomers when all they have to do is press one button over and over.

SE are trying to make money and so they are going to try and make the game appeal to a wider audience. the FFVII PC port to PS4 was their way of appealing to the old school, die hard FFVII fans.

while it's true that turn based games still sell well, SE has put themselves in a position where those games don't sell well enough for them to take the risk and make a big budget triple A turn based RPG.

is he trolling? did he just compare the sales of the full franchise of pokemon and final fantasy with kingdom hearts?

The comparison of one of the biggest RPGs in history vs. Kingdom Hearts? People are turned off by KH cause they can't deal with the name "Disney" on a video game. I wouldn't say that's a fair assessment. Neither can Pokémon be compared - those are literally the biggest console RPG and biggest handheld RPG ever. KH has spanned over many many consoles over its lifespan, which also hurt its sales. Pokémon has always been a franchise on Nintendo handhelds. Final Fantasy (mainline) has always been on the biggest consoles at the time. KH has been on GBA, DS, 3DS, PS4, PSP, PS2... @.@ in addition, FF and Pokémon don't need to rely on their sequels. Anyone can jump in at any game. Not KH! Both have more games and a longer lifespan than KH! No, KH's gripe is it's storyline and accessibility, not sales.

Lest we forget the hype that FFXV is riding on right now as an ARPG (sure, with a "Wait Mode" turn-based esque system). And Witcher III, Dark Souls III, and the fact that turn based is just not receiving any more recognition by Square because they see that and feel it's dated. Plus, Cloud feels great to use in Smash Bros., a real time fighting game.

I really think if done correctly FFVII Remake could be a fantastic game as an ARPG.

So here's my take on it all.As a recent fan of FF7, I must say that turned based combat works really, really well for the game that it was. Speaking as someone who started off playing games as strictly A-RPG, like Kingdom Hearts and Uncharted, then jumping straight into a TBA-RPG, I actually had no problem with the switch at all. It took me a little while to master and get used to the controls, but I rather liked it for the old timey feeling it gave. While the battle system is indeed slow and does take a lot longer to plan out, I wouldn't mind FF7 Remake keeping that same TB feel. However, since this game will appeal as much to new players as to old, what they SHOULD do is bring the combat system from FF10 or FF13 over to the new remake. The thing I love about FF10's combat system is that it is a classic TB system, but the action is much tighter and more fast paced. Now with FF13, you had more freedom to control your characters in combat. At least that's I've been told, having never played FF13 yet. What I would like is if they could make a combination of the two styles somehow to give it that feeling of both old, and new. But as its looking right now, I don't mind the new FF7 Remake being a strictly A-RPG at all. :P

FFXIII had a very cool and fluid ATB system and was probably the most fun I've had with any FF game (pre-Platinum Demo) ever in terms of combat.

Still it very much blurred the lines of action and turn based — maybe a perfect blend of each.

I would have like FF7 remake to be turn based as well, but Action RPGs are fun too so I don't mind this change, its a remake and they want to make changes to achieve a goal that wasn't possible back in 1997,I like this idea.To me what makes Final Fantasy VII so special its the story,so as long as they get that right, they are free to change other things as long as its still fun.

Oh and Tales of Zestiria is an action RPG,its not turn-based
