Wanted to bring this up because so many people are in love with the idea of Sora and Kairi being a couple, but I honestly don't see it. At all.

And it's not because "KH isn't a romantic game (which it really isn't, but that's besides the point)", but because I cannot, for the life of me, see the two together. I think this is partially due to Kairi's lack of screen time and character development; as such, we really don't see much interaction between Sora and Kairi.

People kinda assume that the two would be a couple because "wow, main male character and main female character = madly in love couple", but that's not enough for me. The game never shows me explicitly why they should be good together. Sure, in KH1, Kairi saves Sora from submitting to the darkness. Unfortunately, much of that seen is bogged down by the fact that we don't know much about Kairi at all even up to that point in the game, so it's just kind of like...a random girl saves the main character. Now I'm not saying that's a bad scene or anything, but just think about how much more emotional it would've been IF the game had established a powerful relationship between the two at the beginning! If the game had shown me that they were excellent friends (and not just tell me; there's a difference) perhaps through increased interaction or character development as the story goes on, I would've cared more.

So that's the inherent problem I have with this "couple." They don't actually SHOW that they're good friends, so I can't see the two ever getting together. Kairi has basically no personality, even after all these games. She's barely gotten any screen time in comparison to the other main characters, and the most we've seen her interact with Sora is at the very beginning of KH1...which is not enough.

Although that being said, I can already see the arguments coming: "They show a lot of character! For example, ________"

The problem with that is that all of these scenes that you list is the game TELLING me, "Hey. These two are good friends.", and not SHOWING me that they're friends. Drawing on cave rocks? Telling me, not showing me. Sora's desperation to find her? That's sweet and all, but he gets sidetracked so often and forgets about his ultimate "goal" that it doesn't even seem that realistic. Kairi sending that letter in a bottle? That's the game pretty much telling me, "HEY IDIOT. THIS GIRL CARES ABOUT SORA. YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT."

How do you establish a strong friendship? You imply it through the way the characters interact, develop along with each other, and most of all, have a lot of screen time together. Especially with Kairi's little screen time and basically zero character development, I don't see them becoming a couple at all.

If KH3 wants to make them a couple, they better do some serious renovations on Kairi's character, or else it will turn out fake and unrealistic.

Discussion welcome :)

PS. No, I do not ship Sora and Riku, but honestly the two are more realistic as a couple than Sora and Kairi at this point.

They're 15. Plenty of kids are dating at that age.

Doesn't make it right for these specific characters.

True, he hasn't seen her in a year, but he was asleep for all that time. For him, it was definitely a lot shorter.

He initially knew that she was safe on the islands, so he didn't have anything to worry about and was trying to find Riku. Once he found out that Kairi was captured, he immediately knew that he had to save her. Even his reaction speaks a lot when Pence simply asked him if he knew someone named Kairi.

Even though there are things that are told, there are things that are shown as well. From the drawing in the secret place to their hugs in KH1 and 2 to their conversations.

Nice to go off-topic by complaining about BBS by the way. Love the track changing.

The drawings are part of the problem cuz they just tell not show

And the reason I mentioned the BBS crew is because it's the same problem of telling and not showing

In the past when I was younger, I was like I rather wait till I'm older to date and stuff. Better safe than sorry. But if people do that around ages 15-17, that's fine by me. I just don't do that. I was like 18 19 if not 20 when I had a boyfriend.

Yeah I understand that. :P

But we shouldn't forget that this is a video game and a Japanese one at that. From what I know the protagonists usually in anime and video games coming from there are young. When I first played FF8 and KH I was younger than the characters in those games and I thought the way they acted was normal for their age. Truth be told now that I think about it it's quite unrealistic, they all act like 20 year olds or atleast more mature for their age.

In any case, I don't think age means much in KH. The only time it was brought in a serious wat was when Aqua and Terra were scolding Ven cause he ran out on his own. If anything, I think most kids around that age would be scarred for life were something like that happen to them.

...What's the problem? Is it the group that ships them just because or the game not giving reasons to ship them?

Like you said, romance wasn't a big focal point of the series, and the games imply that they feel something. But how do some scenes not show me they're friends?

They played together, talked about things, shared their thoughts, worried over each other, were relieved when they reunited and didn't want to lose each other in times of danger. That tells me SOMETHING about their friendship without using words, even if it's not enough. Though, I agree with Kairi having no scenes that really show their character, that needs to be changed.

To me, it feels as if you're looking for things to complain (Taking your previous threads into consideration) when there are enough things to dislike about the series that are more important than just a simple shipping, it just isn't worth it getting worked up about something so small.

Let the shippers ship as much as they want, like how we love to talk about KH as much as we want.

Well, it may be true that they don't interact much through the course of the series, but the interactions they do have, and the moments where each one misses the other, points at a strong connection between the two!  What I'm hoping for is that Kingdom Hearts III goes big by expanding and developing Kairi's character intimately! Have her spend some time with Sora in battles, have them have little conversations, have awkward moments where they laugh for no good reason! Have dramatic and life-threatening situations pinned at them to show how they stand together!  That kind of stuff! I really hope KHIII does this!

But yeah, I'm one of the SoKai shippers, SoKai forever! :3

I agree with pretty much everything you just said.  The only reason I can see Sora and Kairi getting together is because they're the main male and female leads, and the male and female leads always get together, right?  Seriously, I'm so tired of that always happening; show why these two should be together, not just tell us because 'main leads.'  Unfortunately, SoKai will probable be the only pairing to happen, unless SE decides to keep everyone as friends, which I'd be totally fine with.

Not even.Roxas was more in love with Xion whom he spent a whole year with in the Organization

Roxas only knew namine for like what..................30 minutes tops when he was an amnesiac inside the Fake Twilight town

Roxas x Xion is the only pairing I want to see happen in KH.  Its the only ship besides Sora/Riku that makes sense.  And I just love these two to bits! <3

And yeah... Roxas x Namine is one of my least favorite pairings of all time.  Though it could be just because of how many fans think they should get together because they're Sora and Kairi's nobodies, and if Sora and Kairi are together, then Roxas and Namine should be together, right?  Even though Roxas and Namine are nothing like Sora and Kairi.  I mean, say if instead of being their nobodies, Roxas was Sora's twin and Namine was Kairi's twin.  Would people still want Roxas and Namine to get together because their twins ended up together?  Somehow, I doubt it.

Literally the most believable relationship in the series. In fact, if I was new and no one told me they were merely friends, I would have thought they were a couple. Hell, show me the Xion Death Scene, I would have thought the same even with the still debated Ice Cream Line.

Regarding Sora/Kairi and KH Relationships/Ships in general: There is too much telling and not nearly enough showing with Sora and Kairi, the latter having next to no fleshed out character (I'm liking the Manga version more at this point and I don't read it.) and Sora seeming like he's friendzoning her with every second they are in the same room. (Awkward and hesitant hug from KH2, anyone?) There are many other ships in the fandom that are far more believable than Sora/Kairi too, funnily enough. As much as people are heavily disagreed with or hated on for the Homosexual Pairings such as Sora/Riku and Axel/Roxas, they have much more character, believably and possibility than Sora and Kairi do at this present time.

They could potentially remedy this in KH3 and beyond by developing it more, but forgive me for being of little faith with what we have right now.

Agreed with everything you said too.

And I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers that hug from KH2.  Seriously, Sora looked super uncomfortable with Kairi hugging him; it was like she was just a classmate that he barely knew.  It doesn't help that just a little later, Sora is on his knees crying in joy and relief that Riku is okay.  Yeah, give the girl your madly in love with a awkward hug and pat on the shoulder, while you can't even stand up because you're just so happy that your best friend is okay.

Guys please stay on topic here. This thread is still about Sora and Kairi :D

The hug was awkward because Sora didn't expect it. He thought Kairi was angry at him for being away for so long, that's why he apologized when he saw her. So the hug just surprised him. He still was happy about it tho.

And like other said, Sora searched for Riku since the end of KH1, so finally finding him was something big for him. Whereas he knew that Kairi is in the castle somewhere.

Was just gonna say this, Namine barely knew Roxas really. Roxas and Xion is more believable, it seemed like innocent love between the two of them. But I think that the series is really just about friendship, but who knows what will happen in KH3.

Well even then "friendship" isn't what I'd use to describe Roxas and Namine cuz again they barely knew each other

As for what'll happen in KH3?Probably more Xehanort fetish in the story and how much of an overseeing god-tier of a villain he is..........off topic yes but that's what they seem to focus on the most since BBS

Sorry for being harsh in my comment however. I did watch a video who thinks that Sora and Kairi is the one of the worst couples ever, most popluar couples where there to like Mario and Peach, etc. He surely hates romance in videogames for the looks of it.
