[SPOILER] The Master of Master's final line

Posted

Japanese version: "Surprise!"

English version: "You'll see!"

Am I detecting a subtle difference with the context of this scene? The Japanese makes it sound like he revealed himself while the English makes it look like he is expecting Luxu to find out for himself.

Feel free to discuss your thoughts on this translation difference and how it reflects the scene of the secret he explained to Luxu.

Yeah, When I heard him say 'Surprise!', I thought it would be a surprise for everyone and not just Luxu. To an extent you could say that phrase also breaks the 4th wall as it would be a surprise to the audience/player too.

But the English version says 'You'll See' which was more directed at Luxu.

In both cases the meaning is still partially preserved in that the contents of the box and its function is still a complete mystery and whatever it does is bound to play a large role in the plot in the future games.

I'm not sure but I read on reddit somewhere that Nomura said that a perceptive KH fan would have figured out the box already. Since this is only hearsay evidence, take it with a grain of salt.

maybe 'surprise!' in Japanese also means 'it's a surprise?' just a guess

Well, I could have meant to say surprise or you'll see! That's the whole matter of it, my friends! I wanted to leave an enigma! A mystery for you all to rack your brains at! And dare I say, I think that it's working! Everyone's wondering about me, and I couldn't be happier!

Honestly though, I didn't even take a peek at the Japanese wording, since I got with the program with the English wording, so I'm guessing that I'm referring that dear old Luxu will see soon enough what the box is for and why! B)

A filthy mongrel such as yourself is not befitting of keeping secrets from a king like myself.

However, I shall show you this one act of mercy for my own amusement of whatever little secret you keep.
