Yeah I feel like Kairi's personality has in a way devolved. She was very free spirited in 1. She had a sassiness to her and was very sarcastic/playful with both Kairi and Riku. For instance, the scene with Sora in Traverse Town where she wants to go with him and after giving him the lucky charm you can get a sense of that free spirit when she tells Sora that he has to make sure she gets the charm back. In 2 a lot of that sassiness and free spirit was lost. And that's because she doesn't get much time to really be her own thing in the games runtime. She spends a lot of it running away and trying to remember who Sora is...Like she doesn't focus on Riku that much. I know she has had a stronger bond with Sora through the first games events but she always mentioned that she wanted all 3 of them together. In 3 it devolves a bit further to the point that the majority of her lines are her just thinking about Sora and wanting to protect him.
