I weirdly can't remember much about playing original KH2 but I remember all the times I've played Final Mix. Original KH1 is etched into my brain though.

it's still mad to me that we died over and over to Dark Riku back then but in Final Mix I beat him fine and was like 'how? how did we struggle for so long with this!?' ?

Yeah, I beat Riku in KH1 on my first try on both the normal and hard difficulty
Dragon Maleficent, Clayton, and the Cave of Wonders head on the other hand...

Dragon Maleficent you definitely need a technique for

once you get that she's ok but it can be tricky at first

Seeing Maleficent get stabbed a few times in a row

I think the worst bit is when you fight Ansem on the beach

I barely ever fought Ansem in the original tbh

although actually I think we still had a harder time with Dark Riku originally ?

I'm guessing if you lost the second phase you had to redo both?

it's more that you don't get to replenish HP

hardest thing is definitely Sephiroth though

The easiest way is to just Megaelixir every time he takes you to 1 HP

Just get into a rhythm of doing that and hit him in between

Basically don't break the rhythm and it works

I've beaten him. The trick is to be quick with cures and to superglide the MINUTE you hear him even start to say "Sin Heartless Angel"

And hit him before he finishes

Yeah very much about time

When he does the Sin move prep to megaelixir and do it the second after he 1 HPs you, not before cause it makes it redundant

But also before he hits you again

There's a specific gap where if you do it and then immediately attack him you eventually get to the end and just hit him and then bask in eternal glory

He is completely about timing really which is why he has such specific dialogue cues about the moves he makes
