He is a grey character because he's essentially someone who, while they have a valid reasoning, is quuestionably acting upon that reasoning

If it was still the too much light angle I'd get it, because we've seen there is an over abundance of light and there would never be a true balance without a hard reset, that makes sense. Xehanort from bbs makes sense

and, at no point do they try to redeem xehanort

Eraques was all about destroying the darkness in bbs, but Xehanort didn't want to destroy the darkness he wanted to destroy the boundaries of the realms and bring about one perfect world again

you also have to consider the order of events as they were presented to us
in BBS he's made out to be this all bad guy looking for pure darkness and to start the keyblade war again

but then you see him in KH3 and you realize that it's not that he's a big bad, he wanted to see the start of it all again, see the leadership behind it, see the balance and how it all came to be

No because he says a "clean slate, darkness would be destroyed and it would be a world beautiful and bright."

It's almost as if KH is one giant story progression and we find out more as we go along

Kingdom hearts is light and would destroy all the darkness, that is the exact opposite of the thing he said in bbs
