A lot of fans don't really know what they actually want. However, you should also consider that you can trace an overall landscape of what they collectively want. It's not a matter of pleasing everyone, it's a matter of creating a product that will please a good part of the fanbase.

It is impossible to please everyone, and people will always complain. But that shouldn't mean you don't have to make an effort to please as many as you can.
