The magic you are talking about is completely lost when you have played another game and come to this one where Kairi is barely anything of a character, but still has a focal point in the story.

To call Kairi the focal point of the story is weird, because really, she is not. The Destiny Trio is the focal point of the narrative and Kairi is but a part of it. Sora does go on and on about saving her, but he also brings Riku up very often.

And really, this is why I say KH1 is magical. When you stop to think of it, it falls to many of the series' later missteps as well. But even then, by dent of it being so simple, it manages to get away from those missteps by focusing on giving us simple but relatable and likeable characters instead of a needlessly confusing plot that treats its characters like dirt.

Is Kairi in KH1 basic? You bet she is. She is unexplored, underutilized and overall, yeah, she gets too little. But even with that little, she is still likeable, she still is her own character, and I think of that as a win for KH1, that it manages to accomplish so much with so little.
