This really sticks in my craw, we as consumers should never pay extra for things that we used to get for free

No Game Sync is required for SW/SH.

For Gen. VI, it could be foregone when going online and still let us play online, except for Battle Spot.

Gen. VII had forced Game Sync, but certain online functions like trading didn't really need them.

Other online functions would still be supported and I imagine those servers would still support GTS.

Nintendo Network through the Nintendo 3DS that is free (aside for the internet bill from the service provider for the person paying for internet) would still be available. Nintendo Switch Online is required for online play.
