Our grades don't really matter till year 3 unless we are common entry

Common entry is just one year in which you decide what course you'll do the next year.

Basically same, all the work I'm doing this year only makes up 20% of the degree

Well generally it's set up something like:
1st year: doesn't count for anything, just get 40%
2nd year: shit gets real, counts for something
3rd year: shit gets realest, do ur firetrucking work

Some unis do have first year count for 10% but in my experience most don't
