Hmm I wouldn't say it needs more combat but side quests for sure

SA1 also had a few of these

There was a gap in between R/B/G to Yellow, Crystal to R/S, Emerald to D/P, D/P to Platinum, OR/AS to S/M, and US/UM to SW/SH.

Sonic also tends to be a platformer where you're going so fast it's not actually possible to plan ahead for what's coming unless you already have prior knowledge of the levels layout.

Sonic absolutely does not need boost

He needs clever long platforming stages with multiple pathways

It's the players job to get through it as skillfully as possible while keeping momentum

Except it tends to be catapulting you along so fast that it's actually 100% impossible to actually react to things as they come.

I definitely think approaching sonic from the angle "he's supposed to be faster than the level" is the wrong approach
