OKay so.

Vanitas, just based on the evidence, is really good rep for BDP. He has a lot of symptoms and openly displays them throughout the novel and games. He might not have been written with that in mind, but it's very good and thought through. The problem lies in him being an antagonist and not given the chance to really thrive. I have a good feeling he'll become important, maybe not a hero but maybe a protag, and they can really flesh out his personality outside of, "Terribly lonely, ruthless, and violent".

If his character is written and taken care of properly in the next arc, he has the potential to be REALLY GOOD BPD-coded representation. Even if he's not a good-good guy, he could be a good BPD-code protagonist/main/anti-hero character in the series.

The main issue is, it's really easy to firetruck up something like this. And, as he stands right now, he's good/decent rep. Genuinely, it's just he's an antagonist, which good lead to the shitty trope of "Villain has [insert mental illness here], which means mental illness = bad".

Jesus my hands are firetrucking cold.

Welcome back to "Wyn should have been a psyche major" staring Me. Wyn. The idiot with too many interests.

Funnily enough, a lot of Vanitas's qualifications are circumstantial, but still hold water because they affect him greatly and it's just :chefskiss:

IDK man. Vanitas is great.

Doesn't mean it's still firetrucking annoying that he meets the criteria for 5 different personality disorders, it just happens to be he fits BPD the best.

So anyway, thanks for coming.

ACTUALLY YOU KNOW WHAT.

firetruck EVERYTHING I SAID.

As long as you read the novel, Vanitas is good representation of a BPD-code characters.

Because the novel fleshes him out more and gives thoughtful explanations and a timeline of who and how he developed BPD. We get to see inside his head and learn about the way he thinks and his thoughts on his actions and who he is as a character. He's not JUST a villain, he's someone who's been horrifically abused and developed BPD because of it. Even as an antagonist, he's clearly got issues and his own set of problems that are similar to that of the protags. The difference is they have support systems and he doesn't.

Do I think he deserves to have a redemption arc of some kind? Yes, but that's a personal preference.

I think I'm done now.

¯_(ツ)_/¯

I want a game or book where we get to play as Vanitas as a young kid before all the crazy stuff happens to him. So we slowly see him turn into the person we know today.

That’s not possible.

Well, that's kinda...impossible.

You see. Vanitas, used to be Ventus.

Oh right

Specifically, the darkness in Ven's heart.

The closest we got to “Vanitas’s childhood” was Dark Road. And we all saw how greatly that turned out.

True so we'd just get another Ven game basically. BBS flashbacks

However, we do see bits of Venitas’s life as Xehanort’s apprentice in the BBS novel!

To make a long firetrucking story short:
It was hell.

Oof

:Cry3:

I might have cried in the sand when I first read it.

Awww

I was at the actual beach and I cried into the sand like a ducking idiot.

“The stars are beautiful tonight.”

“You know what’s also beautiful?”

“The moon?”

“Yeah. It’s the moon.”
