I think it's a pretty terrible addition to gameplay that involves party members. Fire Emblem is harder when the whole idea is that characters die and never return but for the most part its a bit of a nuisance in rpgs

That's true..Though, in recent entries, you can turn off the permadeath if you're not a fan
