Well, over here they both fall under "chips" but the thin ones like McDonald's are known as fries

Iirc my food history right.. It originates from a belgian village whehre they'd fry fish often.. and during one really harsh winter, the'd have to find other sources.. like potatoes.. so they then decided "Hey, what if we prepare this like we do fish??"
