It is not needed, and it surely won't stop you from completing the game.

However, if you want it, there are a couple of opportunities when you can go back. The first opportunity is after completing the Djose trials and ends when you get to the Moonflow (you'll know these places when you get there). The next opportunity is after beating Spherimorph (in Macalania)and ends when you initiate the Crawler fight. In both these cases, simply run back to Luca, then sail on the ship to Besaid. The latter time is better as you can pick up a Jecht Sphere as well to help Auron learn some new Overdrives.

Alternatively, you can just wait until late game when you can freely travel all over Spira. However if you are playing the PAL/Internayional versions of the game, you'll have to battle through a Dark Aeon. If you are playing the US version of the game you won't need to worry about this though.

I didn't even fudge w/ 100% for FFX b/c w/ side quests like the alternate weapons since I had other things on my plate at the time.
