September 14, 20233 yr I have honestly started doing this with anime tooI don't really bother with subs anymore, I get way more enjoyment out of dubs
September 14, 20233 yr There are some times when I don't vibe with an English dub but it's more issue with script than anythingLike Netflix Eva dub- get that out my faceSus 96 ADV dub- in my veins bro.
September 14, 20233 yr i don't really watch anime anymore but of the couple I've kept up with or started watching out of boredom, i also go for English if it's available
September 14, 20233 yr Plus sub people usually can't understand the language or the context of words and stuff they just like the way their voices sound or their screams.Japanese VA's got screaming on lock
September 14, 20233 yr But at least with dubs I can tell it apart and the great ones really do a great job with itWhich works well for meAlso jokes just works so much better
September 14, 20233 yr YuppYeah I heard bad stuff about that one. But the Netflix dub for Vinland Saga is great compared to the Crunchyroll one so you get some and you lose some.
September 14, 20233 yr Eva dub was a case of whack scripting That's another thing, idk if this is a hot take butDubs should be allowed to contextually and translate dialouge in a localized wayOther countries do it for our scripts why do anime/video games have to be a 1:1 translation? Things don't translate well sometimes they come off as stilted or awkward. Tbh I preferred og dub goku to sub goku in terms of characterization.
September 14, 20233 yr I actually agree with that. Which is why I have started to ignore people who cry about "accuracy" when it still ends up saying the same meaning told in a different way.I used to see it a lot with KH but nowadays it's mostly with 7 RemakeAlthough there is one that I find baffling and it was in ff16. There's one scene where a character has a whole dialogue in English but in Japanese it's just him shouting fire constantlyReally weird
September 14, 20233 yr KH gets s flub now and then but is pretty solid. 7T dub completely changes Aerith and Cloud's relationship in a way that pisses me off.Ok that sounds hilarious lolSome "monstah cardo" vibes
September 14, 20233 yr yeah that scene with 16 is mind bogglinghe has a pretty impactful line there in English with voice raising and everythingin Japanese he literally justfire.fira.firaga.firaja....
September 14, 20233 yr it's just what makes logical sense. if a character rattles off a little poem that every japanese kid learned growing up, it makes sense to have them say that in the original version. but when you send it over to america to be dubbed (or any other country, really), then it makes more sense to change it to something that every american kid learned growing up. otherwise you end up having to do what fansubbers do and add translator notes (which isn't to shit on fansubbers, of course: they do good work)if it need to be that specific poem to make a joke work, then you have to try and rework the joke to make it make sense with the american poem you've selected
September 14, 20233 yr Hawk did you get it I said that scene sounded hotYeah exactly- to both of those; but subbers act like you're tainting the cultural experience or Authorial intent or some shit
