The phrase "Go back to the shadows from whence you came" is grammatically correct. So when, in the intro, Gloreth says that, it's early foreshadowing that Gloreth is younger than people think. The correct terminology is "Go back to the shadow whence you came". It's also a testament to the Director's stupidity and ignorance because, if she truly knew the backstory, she would have changed it to be grammatically correct. But, she doesn't, she only cares about her privileged position and the language has changed over time, to the point no one would be able to detect anything wrong with the sentence.
