I think the best fix to silent protagonist would be to have a madeup language that only the protag can understand and is only translated through text boxes.

like, chell from portal is (afaik) literally mute. she can't talk so you don't expect her to, and there's no drive for you to insert yourself as the character
link is in between, since he does have a degree of personality and, despite being unable to talk, he's sort of put forward as a "you could put yourself as the mc if you want"
something like a hoyoverse game, where you pick male/female mc and they can talk but you never hear it is just stupid. they try to give them personality through dialogue options, and it works to a degree, but it still comes across more as "this is your self insert oc but you can't change their look"

And that just begs the question of why you can choose dialogue options if Link is mute
