I think the problem they end up running into isn't the medium or the references (though those will be factors), but the fact that they need to either pick 1 story of the many available or create a brand new one just for the adaptation. It's not like you can just mix and match then say "it follows the story of ocarina of time"

I'd prefer them choosing one story than creating a brand new one
