Also, something I was thinking about earlier: would ffxv be better or worse if noctis couldn't use the same weapons as gladio/prompto/ignis? So no great sword, no knives, and no gun/machines

depends on his potential moveset. if he can only wield one weapon they could have put the resources into making one style great

they modded FF16 ifrit into the game for summoner

that's a layered question because:
1 - launch game didn't let you use the other characters, so the only way to use those weapons were through noctis
2 - the battle system is so firetrucked already that removing weapons doesnt do much damage to it either way
3 - for it to be a good thing, noctis would have needed different weapons to replace those, PLUS fully controllable teammates like the DLC added, PLUS a battle system that rewards the use of different weapons and playstyles like 7R games

But would he really need replacement weapons, or could it work well enough to rely on teammates? Plenty of older rpgs locked weapons and skills to select characters, after all

well, i only say they need to be replaced because noctis as a character and part of his arc is obtaining those weapons

gameplay wise it would be fine to lock him down too

they could honestly remove the weapons from the story and it wouldn't change

i'd say replacing with different weapons would have been the best of both worlds. or even still having the same ones, but having noctis use them stylistically different from his teammates

the weapons never really mattered in xv

Noctis being a jack of all trades but master of none does work well enough

it was always the summons

I do think the family weapons should have played a bigger part in his personal arsenal

Something that he is actually a master of

Like yeah you can use the armiger form or whatever it's called and that is fun to use

Which also gets stronger the more weapons you get

But I do wish you could have used them more in your basic combos too

Also a way to get rid of the downside of using those weapons alone

Like if you collect them all you don't lose health when using them or something
