PROLOGUE:

(A large castle sits in the distance. The remnants of a once beautiful city sit at the foot of the castle. A large group of undead and people, who are still alive, are ravaging the city, killing off the remaining citizens. A group of the undead breaks off from the city rushing into the distance. They are rushing toward a lone woman. She appears to be in her late 30s, early 40s. This woman has short blonde hair, glistening silver armor, and a thin scar on her left cheek. She appears to be war-torn and depressed. She clutches the cross necklace, embracing her neck. She tugs on it, ripping the necklace. Her hand glows with a white light and the cross expands in size. She lowers her hand and a blade extends out of one end of the cross. She glares at the oncoming group of undead. She extends her free hand and releases a flurry of ice. The group becomes encased in ice. She rushes at them and cuts them down, as they are powerless to stop her. Many of the other monsters in the city see her coming and decide to greet her. She doesn’t slow down, ready to end this. She cuts through a few of the first monsters and then starts waving her hand around and mumbling under her breath. A lightning bolt strikes down, paralyzing a large chunk of the army. She continues on, shredding the undead, mercilessly. She appears to have the upper hand for a while, but then their numbers begin to overwhelm her. Undead monsters rise from the group, adding to her problems. One of the undead monsters clubs her in the face, knocking her to the ground. She quickly looks up to see that they’ve surrounded her. But, a flurry of arrows tears through each of their skulls. Suddenly, the woman is scooped up off the ground by a large heavy-set man.)

Woman: Matt! You showed up!

(The woman wraps her arms around his neck, as tears pour down her cheeks.)

Matt: Yeah I did! You should’ve never come here by yourself!

(Flurries of arrows continue to spray down on the undead around them. The woman stops hugging him and he sets her down.)

Woman: I had no other choice, you guys wouldn’t help me!

Matt: Then you shouldn’t have come at all!

Woman: And just let them win, after everything they’ve done! No thanks.

(She turns and picks up her cross/sword. An arrow soars past her head and into the skull of an undead, running up behind her.)

Woman: I can see that Rusty’s here.

(Rusty waves at them, from atop the nearby cliff. He’s a thin, tall guy, with a bow and arrow and a deadly aim.)

Matt: We were worried about you. It seems that we had a right to be.

Woman: Thanks for your help, but it would’ve been nice to know that I had it in the first place.

Matt: I’m sorry. But, this is a big job for just the three of us. Things ain’t what they use to be. What makes you think you can take this guy down, if even HE couldn't?

Woman: …I’m not sure that I can. But, I have to. If I don’t do it now, he’s only going to get stronger.

(She rushes into the city, prepared to face the undead army.)

Matt: Dammit, this is no time to be stubborn!

(Matt rushes after her, helping her take down the undead army. Between the two of them, they make it look like a piece of cake. She slices them apart and Matt punches them in the face, smashing their skulls in.)

Matt: If you think you have what it takes then get your ass over here! You don’t have time to waste your strength on these idiots!

(She nods her head and rushes toward Matt. Matt scoops her up and tosses her toward the castle. She mumbles something under her breath and the castle wall collapses, allowing her to soar inside, unharmed. She lands just beneath a set of spiraling stairs. She quickly makes her way up the stairs, stopping outside a massive set of double doors. She takes a deep breath, as a tear runs down her cheek.)

Woman: It finally ends here. I’m just sorry that it has to end like this…

(She kicks the doors in and readies her sword. She sees a thin silver-haired man clothed in skin-tight black clothes, turned away from her. He is looking out at the city.)

Man: It’s been too long, Eva.

CHAPTER 1:

INT. ROSSAIRE- MORNING-30 years ago

(The sun is shining over the beautiful town of Rossaire. The people are happily walking through the streets. All of them making their way to a massive church, situated on the far end of town. A ten year old girl and her mother are making their way through the crowd. The mother is wearing a long dress, covering almost every inch of her body. Her blonde hair is tied in a bun and her nose is in the air. Her daughter is looking around at all of the people, as her long blonde ponytails sway in the wind. They enter the church and sit down, awaiting the sermon. The little girl begins to swing her feet back and forth. Her mom smacks her legs and she quickly stops. She sits up straight and puts her hands in her lap. The preacher walks out, as he does everyone stands up and bows.)

Preacher: Thank you. You may be seated.

(They all sit down. The preacher smiles, as he looks out at the crowd.)

Preacher: Before we begin, I would like to take a moment to thank Mrs. Bradford for her generous donation to the church.

(The stuck up mother rises and smiles at the crowd.)

Preacher: Especially, at such a crucial time for her. As many of you know, her husband has left with our countries forces to fight in the war. I would like us all to bow our heads and say a prayer for her and her husband.

Mrs. Bradford: Thank you.

(She sits down and they all bow their heads.)

EXT. CHURCH

(The sermon has ended and the crowd is leaving the church. Mrs. Bradford and her daughter are again walking through the street.)

Mrs. Bradford: When we get home, I want you to clean your room.

Daughter: Yes, ma’am.

Mrs. Bradford: I’ll make you lunch and you can eat when you’re finished.

Daughter: Thank you, mother.

(Her daughter gives her a warm smile and then looks away, as depression comes over her face.)

Merchant: Hey, get back here you little brats!

(Ahead of the mother and daughter, an older merchant is chasing three young boys who have stolen some bread and fruits from his cart.)

Merchant: Get back here! The three of you should’ve been in church, not stealing from a helpless old man!

Mrs. Bradford: Godless little hooligans. I wish I knew those boys’ parents, I’d be sure to give them a piece of my mind. Eva, have you ever seen those boys at school?

Eva: No, mother.

Mrs. Bradford: Humph, they must be dirty little street rats.

Eva: What’s a street rat?

(Her mother glares at her.)

Eva: I mean, what’s a street rat, ma’am?

Mrs. Bradford: It means that they’re homeless. They have no parents; no one to teach them right from wrong. It makes me sick to think that they can just run around doing whatever they want!

(Eva watches as the three little boys elude the merchant and climb up to the rooftops making their escape, laughing at their victory.)

INT. THE BRADFORD HOME

(Eva puts her plate in the sink and begins to wash the plate off. Her mother walks into the kitchen.)

Mrs. Bradford: I’m going out to pick up a few groceries. Don’t go anywhere and make sure you read some of your Bible, while I’m gone.

Eva: Yes, ma’am.

(Mrs. Bradford walks over and kisses Eva on her forehead. She then leaves the house. Eva cuts off the water and sets her plate down. She runs over to the window and looks out, to see if her mother is still around. She doesn’t see her mother anywhere, so she runs over to the door and exits the house. She runs off in the direction that the three boys ran off in. She runs into the woods and soon reaches a clearing. In this clearing, five boys are sitting around eating. Three of them are the three that stole the food from the merchant. They all look up and stop laughing and eating.)

Boy with brown hair: Hey, how’s it going?

(The boy puts on a wide smile.)

Eva: How can you be so happy after you just stole from that guy?! He didn’t do anything to you!

(The chubby kid stands up.)

Chubby kid: Hey! We have no choice, alright! It’s either steal, or die!

(The brown haired boy stands up and puts his hand on the chubby kid’s shoulder.)

Brown-haired boy: It’s cool, Matt. Calm down, she obviously doesn’t know why we do what we do.

(Matt sits down.)

Brown-haired boy: Listen, we don’t have any money. We don’t have anything, really. The only option we have is to steal. If we don’t, we’ll starve.

Eva: But, stealing is wrong! No matter what! You’re taking something that’s not yours!

Brown-haired boy: What would you do if you didn’t have a home or money? Would you just lie around and rot, or would you do something about it?

Eva: …I don’t know! I wouldn’t steal, I can tell you that much!

Brown-haired boy: Well, good for you. That’s very noble of you.

(The boy walks over and sticks his hand out.)

Brown-haired boy: My name is Daniel. You?

Eva: I can’t touch your hand, it’s probably filthy!

Daniel: Oh, that’s cool. But, can you tell me your name?

(Daniel pulls his hand away and Eva settles down.)

Eva: Eva.

Daniel: That’s a really pretty name.

(Eva blushes and scratches the back of her head.)

Eva: Thanks…

(Daniel steps aside and extends his hand to his group of friends. He points to the scrawny kid on the side.)

Daniel: This is Rusty. He doesn’t talk, but that’s ok, he’s still a good friend!

(Daniel signals to Matt.)

Daniel: This is Matt, as you can see he hoards most of the food we steal!

(The group of kids burst out laughing, but Eva stands there, confused. Daniel signals to the tall black boy sitting across from Matt.)

Daniel: That’s Jack. He’s a bit older than us, but it’s not a big deal. Age isn’t as important as friendship!

(Daniel signals to the last child, sitting next to Jack.)

Daniel: That’s Ben. He’s my little brother! But, then again I guess you could say that we’re all brothers. We all lost our parents in the war. We actually don’t even remember our real names. These are just what we call each other, so you can use those names, too!

Eva: So, what do you guys do then? If you don’t have parents?

(Daniel shrugs.)

Daniel: We just do what we want. We wander around, until we find some food and then we sit around and bullshit!

Eva: Hey, that’s a bad word!

Daniel: What food?

(They all burst out laughing, much to Eva’s annoyance.)

Eva: No, not food! You know what you said!

(Daniel scratches his head, smiling.)

Daniel: Yeah, I know what I said, but who’s going to stop me! We don’t have anyone to tell us what to do, no one but ourselves! It’s rough at times, but we’re all right! We don’t need anybody, because we have each other!

(Without realizing it, Eva smiles. In a way, she envies their freedom.)

INT. FOREST CLEARING-NEXT MORNING

(The group is sleeping in the clearing, when suddenly a foot kicks Daniel in the side. Daniel leaps up and yells out, accidentally waking up his friends. Eva sets down a bag filled with food.)

Eva: Eat up. I don’t want you guys stealing, anymore.

(The group crowds around the food, while she goes and sits down on the nearby stump. Daniel looks over at her and smiles.)

CHAPTER 2:

Ben: Look at all this food!

(Jack quickly pulls some bread out of the sack and takes a bite.)

Jack: This is the best bread I’ve ever tasted!

Matt: Yes! She brought us sandwiches, too! Rus, you want something?

(Rusty nods his head and Matt hands him an apple. Daniel picks out an apple, as well, and then walks over to the stump, sitting down next to Eva.)

Daniel: Where’d you get all this food?

Eva: I got some of my mom’s money and bought it. I figured you guys would want some breakfast.

Daniel: So, you stole your mom’s money? Isn’t that the same thing as what we did the other day?

Eva: No! It’s completely different. I’m not stealing from my mom I’m just, borrowing it!

Daniel: Oh, that’s cool. How do you plan on paying her back?

Eva: Well…

Daniel: Hahahaha! Its ok, you only stole, because you wanted to help someone in need. It’s not necessarily a good thing, but you have good intentions. You wouldn’t do it if you didn’t feel that you had to.

Eva: ….Yeah, I guess.

Daniel: Either way, I want to thank you. We try not to steal, too often, so we tend not to get very much to eat. This really means a lot to us.

Eva: …I realize that it must be hard to go each day, not knowing if you’re going to live to see the next day. But, it must be nice to do what you want. No one’s there to tell you what to do, or how to do it.

Daniel: It is pretty cool, sometimes. But, I’m sure that if we didn’t have each other, that it would be a lot harder. But, hey!

(Daniel stands up and smiles at Eva.)

Daniel: It would seem that we have another sibling, now! We’ve never had a sister, before!

(The group looks up from eating and smiles at Eva. They all run at her and tackle her to the ground.)

Eva: HEY! Get off me, you weirdoes! Ugh, you’re all disgusting!

Daniel: Dog pile!

(Daniel leaps on top of the group, as they all laugh and have a good old time.)

INT. FOREST CLEARING-MORNING-3 Years later

(Eva, Matt, Rusty, Jack, and Ben are all crowded around Daniel, while he sleeps. Eva puts her lip to her mouth, as they edge closer toward him.)

Eva: Shhh….

(Matt steps on a twig and Daniel’s eyes burst open. They all leap at Daniel, but he rolls on to his back, eluding them all. They each bump into each other, as Daniel runs away.)

Eva: Dammit, Matt!

Jack: You blew it, man!

Matt: Oh, shut up!

Ben: C’mon guys, he’s getting away!

(They all quickly get up and give chase into the woods.)

Daniel: C’mon guys! You’re faster than that!

(Eva sprints past the others, following close behind Daniel. Daniel glances back and is surprised to see Eva. He quickly speeds up, afraid of getting tackled. Daniel looks back and then quickly looks forward, only to bump into someone, standing just outside the woods. Daniel falls over and Eva and the group slows down, surprised. Eva looks up to see her mother, glaring at her. She looks away, afraid to look her mother in the eyes.)

CHAPTER 3:

Mrs. Bradford: Eva, what are you doing with these filthy street rats?!

Eva: Ummm….I…

Mrs. Bradford: I want you to go home, immediately. You and I are going to a serious talk, young lady.

Eva: Yes, ma’am.

(Eva stares at the ground, as she walks past her mother, not once looking back.)

Mrs. Bradford: I want you to stay away from my daughter, do you understand me?! She is far too good for any of you, to associate with her.

Ben: Um, what’s ass-o-see eight mean?

(Mrs. Bradford rolls her eyes.)

Mrs. Bradford: Exactly.

(Mrs. Bradford turns around and walks away.)

Jack: Eva’s mom doesn’t seem very nice.

Daniel: Yeah, I hope she’ll be alright.

INT. THE BRADFORD HOME-

(Eva is sitting on a chair in the living room. Her mother is sitting on the couch, staring at her.)

Mrs. Bradford: Why would you lower yourself to assorting with those repugnant little brats? Why don’t you hang out with any of the children from church? What about Suzy, she’s a wonderful little girl?

Eva: Suzy’s not wonderful, she’s just a liar. She’s fake around the adults, so everyone thinks she so sweet.

Mrs. Bradford: Don’t talk about her like that! That is very rude, Eva! It’s obvious that those boys have you brainwashed! How long have you been hanging out with them?

Eva: I don’t know, a couple days, I guess.

Mrs. Bradford: Eva, don’t you lie to me! I’ve been noticing that I’ve been losing money for at least a year now! I never would’ve imagined that my own daughter had been stealing it, to feed some worthless little street rats! Well, not anymore. You’re grounded for 3 months!

(Eva quickly stands up.)

Eva: 3 months?!

Mrs. Bradford: Do you want to add another 3 months?!

(Eva sits down and looks away.)

Eva: I’m sorry, mother.

Mrs. Bradford: You need to learn that what you did was wrong, Eva. I’m going easy on you, because I understand that we all make mistakes. But, as people, we need to learn from those mistakes. It’s what God wants. For the next 3 months, you will go to school and come home. You will stay home and do a list of chores that I have written up for you. Maybe a little around-the-house work will do you some good. On Sundays you will be permitted to leave the house, in order to go to church. But, immediately afterwards you will return home and complete your chores.

Eva: …Yes, ma’am.

EXT. CHURCH-MORNING

(Eva and her mother exit the church. A little brown-haired girl walks out and hurries after them.)

Girl: Eva!

(Eva and her mother turn around.)

Mrs. Bradford: Hello, Suzy! How are you?

Suzy: I’m great, Mrs. Bradford! It’s a beautiful day, isn’t it?

Mrs. Bradford: Yes, it is! Eva, say hello to Suzy.

Eva: …Hi, Suzy. How are you?

(Eva looks away, uncaring of whether or not Suzy answers her.)

Suzy: I’m great! I wanted to know if you wanted to come over to my house and hang out!

Eva: Sorry, I’m grounded.

Mrs. Bradford: Oh, Eva, it’s fine if you want to hang out with your friend! I don’t mind.

(Eva leans in and mutters to her mother.)

Eva: Mom, I don’t want to!

Mrs. Bradford: Yes you do. Trust me, it’ll be fun!

(Mrs. Bradford shoves Eva toward Suzy.)

Mrs. Bradford: She’d love to, Suzy! Have fun, girls!

Suzy: We will, Mrs. Bradford!

(Mrs. Bradford smiles and then walks away. Eva rolls her eyes, as her and Suzy walk away. They walk down the street, in silence. But, Suzy soon begins talking.)

Suzy: So, what do you like to do for fun?

Eva: Suzy, why do you even care? We’ve never even hung out, outside of school or church.

Suzy: Truth is, I wanted to ask you something.

Eva: Yeah, what is it.

Suzy: Why were you hanging out with those freaks?

Eva: Freaks?

Suzy: Yeah, those homeless kids.

Eva: They’re not freaks! They’re my friends!

Suzy: Eva, they’re freaks. They don’t believe in god, they steal, they don’t know right from wrong…

Eva: How would you know, you don’t even know them?!

Suzy: I don’t have to know them! Everyone in the town hates them! They steal and cause trouble, so why do you hang out with them?

Eva: I hang out with them, because they’re my friends! Because, I actually took the time to get to know them and realize that they aren’t freaks, they’re kids just like you and me. They’re just lonely, they don’t have any parents.

Suzy: Exactly! They don’t have anyone to teach them right from wrong! They’re just a waste of space.

(Eva turns and punches Suzy in the face, knocking her to the ground.)

Suzy: Ow, what’d you do that for?!

Eva: Because, you’re a stupid bitch!

Suzy: Hey, you said a bad word!

Eva: What “because?”

Suzy: You know what you said! I’m telling my mom and she’s gonna tell your mom!

Eva: Go ahead, I don’t care!

(Eva storms off.)

Nice story bro.

CHAPTER 4:

INT. THE BRADFORD HOUSE

(Eva bursts into the house and slams the door shut. Her mother sits up from the couch and looks at Eva, baffled.)

Mrs. Bradford: Young lady, I will not tolerate you slamming doors, it is un-lady like! What are you doing home; I thought you and Suzy were going over to her house!

Eva: I already told you, I’m not going to hang out with her!

Mrs. Bradford: Don’t you use that tone with me, young lady! You will do as I say! I am your mother and you will show me respect, do you understand me?!

Eva: …Yes, mother.

Mrs. Bradford: Now get back over there and play with your friend.

Eva: She’s not my friend and I’m sure that she won’t want to hang out anymore, considering I punched her in the face!

(Eva storms off, racing up the stairs and into her room; slamming the door shut. Eva’s mother sits down on the couch and puts her hand over her face.)

Mrs. Bradford: What am I going to do with that girl?!

(Suddenly, a stone hits Eva’s window. Eva looks out the window and sees Daniel. Eva smiles and opens up the window, climbing down. She leaps down and Daniel catches her, with ease. He sets her down.)

Daniel: Are you okay? We were worried about you.

Eva: I’m fine. My mom’s just being difficult. Sorry, that she treated you that way.

Daniel: It’s fine. We’re use to it.

Eva: That doesn’t make it right! You guys shouldn’t have to be treated that way just, because you don’t live like we do!

Daniel: Eva, calm down. It means enough that you care. We don’t have to impress anyone. The only people that matter to me are the ones that care. Like you. The rest of them can do whatever they want; it doesn’t have any real impact on me or the others.

Eva: Well, it bothers me. You don’t deserve that.

Daniel: Hahahaha! You need to learn to chill out! Life’s a lot easier that way. Anyway, I’m glad to see that you’re okay. That’s why I came over. So, I guess I’ll see you around?

Eva: I hope so, but it’ll definitely be harder now that my mom knows what’s going on. I’m sorry, but I don’t think that I’ll be able to bring you guys any more food.

Daniel: Its fine, we’ll manage. See ya, around!

(Daniel turns around and hurries away.)

Eva: …Hey, wait!

(Daniel turns around.)

Daniel: Yeah?

Eva: Do you mind helping me get back into my window?

Daniel: Well, shit! I didn’t even think about that! Sit tight; I’ll go get the guys!

EXT. THE BRADFORD HOUSE

(Matt is holding Jack, who’s holding Rusty, who’s holding Daniel, who’s holding Eva. Ben is watching, because he is far too short to help out. They’re all struggling to support each other. Eva grasps her window and pulls herself in. But, she slips and hits the floor of her room, shaking the house. Her mother gets up from the couch, surprised. The group falls to the ground and hurriedly gets up, running into the woods. Mrs. Bradford hurries up the stairs and opens Eva’s door. Eva is asleep in her bed. Her mother looks around, confused. She shuts the door and Eva gets up, running over to her window. She looks out at the group, as they peer out from the bushes. Eva waves to them and they wave back, shortly before fleeing.)

INT. THE BRADFORD HOME-2 years later

(A now fifteen year old Eva is hurrying down the stairs and out the door. Mrs. Bradford walks into the house, stopping her.)

Mrs. Bradford: Where are you going?

Eva: Out.

(Eva walks past her mom; her mom grabs her shoulder and turns her around.)

Mrs. Bradford: Eva, what has been up with you lately? You’ve been very distant.

Eva: Nothing’s wrong, mom. I don’t need a lecture every time I see you.

Mrs. Bradford: Eva, I am your mother! I’m getting really tired of this barrier you’re putting between us.

Eva: I’m not the one putting a barrier between us.

(Eva walks away.)

Mrs. Bradford: Are you still hanging out with those filthy children?

Eva: That’s none of your business.

(Eva continues to walk away.)

INT. ROSSAIRE-NOON

(Eva, Daniel and the others are walking down the street laughing.)

Matt: Man, this is the first town we’ve stayed at this long!

Daniel: Well, we have a great reason to stay!

(Eva blushes.)

Ben: Yeah, the food here rules!

Jack: No, Ben. Eva!

Ben: I know that! It was a joke.

Jack: Man, you need some new material!

(They all laugh, happy to be together.)

Eva: But…does that mean that you guys will eventually move on to another town?

Daniel: I can’t say. The future is always a mystery, but as of now we don’t have any plans to move on. We’re happy here. We’ve made a friend here.

Eva: I hope you guys stay as long as possible.

(Daniel puts his arm around Eva.)

Daniel: We’ll stay here as long as you do.

INT. BRADFORD HOME

(Eva walks into her house and is greeted by her mother and a young man, only a bit older than herself.)

Mrs. Bradford: I’m so glad you’re home!

Eva: Who’s he?

Mrs. Bradford: Charles this is my daughter, Eva Bradford. Eva, this is Charles Braxton.

(Charles reaches out his hand, signaling for her to do the same.)

Mrs. Bradford: I’ve chosen him to be your fiancée!

CHAPTER 5:

Eva: Excuse me?! My fiancée! Screw you!

Mrs. Bradford: Eva!

Eva: Get your hand out of my face; I want nothing to do with you!

(Eva walks past Charles, infuriated.)

Mrs. Bradford: Eva, what is the matter with you?!

Eva: What’s the matter with me?! What the hell is the matter with you?!

Mrs. Bradford: Watch your mouth! A young lady should not speak that way!

Charles: Um, this is very awkward…

Eva: Yeah, well it should be! I hope it’s as awkward for you, as it is for me!

(Eva hurries upstairs, ignoring her mother.)

Charles: Mrs. Bradford, I’m sorry…

Mrs. Bradford: No, don’t apologize, Charles. It’s not at all your fault that my daughter is spoiled rotten. If you would, please wait down here. I’ll go get her to come to her senses.

(Mrs. Bradford hurries up the stairs and bursts into Eva’s room. Eva is about to hop out of her window. She sees her mother and quickly leaps down, running into the woods. Her mother runs over to the window and sticks her head out.)

Mrs. Bradford: Get back here! If you don’t agree to marry him, then you can find somewhere else to live!

(Eva keeps running, without slowing down.)

INT. THE FOREST CLEARING-EVENING

(Daniel and the group are sitting around a fire, laughing.)

Jack: Dan, you got it BAAAD for Eva!

Daniel: I can’t help it, she’s beautiful.

Ben: Yuck! Bro, you got to get over her, she’s our friend! You’re acting like she’s some girl!

(They all fall silent and look at Rusty.)

Matt: Wow, Rus. That was really deep.

(Suddenly, Eva rushes into the clearing. Tears are forming beneath her eyes. She drops her to knees and the tears rush down her rosy cheeks. Daniel and his group quickly rise to their feet. Daniel hurries over to Eva and kneels down, putting his hand on her shoulder.)

Daniel: Eva, what’s wrong?

Eva: My…mother…she’s…

Daniel: Hey, you need to calm down. Come over here and collect your thoughts. Then we’ll talk.

(Daniel helps her up and leads her over to the fire.)

Eva: My mom, she’s forcing me to get married!

(The group’s eyes open wide.)

Matt: Are we invited to the wedding?

(They all burst out laughing.)

Eva: Matt!

(They all fall silent and stare at Rusty. They all burst out laughing.)

Ben: Damn, Rusty! You’re killing me!

Eva: Guys! This isn’t funny!

Jack: Eva, just because you’re mom tells you to marry the guy, doesn’t mean you have to. Just don’t do it. She can’t force you.

Eva: Yes, she can! If I don’t marry him, then she’ll kick me out!

Ben: What’s wrong with that? You can come live with us!

(They all burst out laughing.)

Eva: Hey, that’s not a bad idea!

Daniel: Don’t be irrational, Eva.

Eva: What do you mean? This is perfect! I can just hang out with you guys all the time!

(Everyone but Daniel and Eva cheers.)

Daniel: Can I talk to you over there, for a second?

Eva: Of course.

(They get up and walk to the edge of the clearing.)

Daniel: I don’t think this is a good idea.

Eva: Why not? We’ll have a lot of fun and now I don’t have to hide it.

Daniel: But, you’d be throwing your life away.

Eva: Why don’t you want me here?

Daniel: You’re taking this the wrong way. I don’t want you to throw your life away. You have a family, a home, money, and safety. That’s not something that should be so easily tossed aside.

Eva: A family?! I haven’t seen my father in 7 years! My “mother” is a selfish bitch! You guys are my family!

Daniel: I understand that you’re upset right now, but you have to hear me out. Don’t do this. You’re going to regret it. I would do anything to bring my parents back. To have a family. Don’t do this, Eva.

Eva: Are you serious? You’re not happy with your life?

Daniel: In some ways yes and in others…no. I wish I knew what it felt like to have parents. I don’t even remember their faces. I’ve had to take care of my brother, ever since he was a baby. I had my friend’s help after a couple years, but it hasn’t been easy. You don’t want this. You think you want this, but, trust me, you don’t. Go home to your mother, tell her you’ll at least see the guy and get your life back. If you still don’t like him, then talk to your mother. I’m not telling you to let your mother control you, but I am telling you to be civil with her. In the end, she only wants what’s best for you.

Eva: I can’ believe you’re defending her, after the way she’s treated you.

Daniel: I’m not defending her, I’m protecting you.

Eva: …Thanks.

(Daniel hugs Eva and then releases her.)

Eva: Bye, guys. I’ll see you around.

Matt: I thought you were staying here, with us?

Eva: No, I’m going to head home. But, I’ll come and hang out again, as soon as I can.

Ben: Okay, see you around.

Jack and Matt: Yeah, see you around.

(Rusty nods at Eva.)

Eva: Bye.

(Eva walks back into the woods, making her way home.)

Jack: Why’d she change her mind?

Daniel: Because, I talked her into going home.

Matt: …Why the hell would you do that? I thought you liked her?

Daniel: I do. That’s why I’m willing to let her go. I want her to be safe and have a home. It doesn’t mean we can't still be friends.

Jack: Yeah, but it does mean that you and her can never be together. She’ll be a married woman; off limits.

(Daniel looks away, unsure of his decision.)

INT. BRADFORD HOME-EVENING

(Eva walks into the house, trying to hide her anger. Mrs. Bradford and Charles rise from the couch.)

Eva: …I’m…sorry. I’ll give Charles a chance. If it’s okay with you, I would like to go out with you, but not tonight. Is tomorrow night, alright?

Charles: Yes! Of course!

(He strides over to her and takes her hand. He raises it to his lips and kisses the back of her hand. She puts on a fake smile. He turns and kisses Mrs. Bradford’s hand and then leaves. Mrs. Bradford turns and looks at Eva. She bursts into tears and embraces Eva.)

Mrs. Bradford: I’m so happy that you’ve come to your senses!

Eva: Yeah, mom. I’m kind of tired, so if you don’t mind, I’d like to head to bed.

Mrs. Bradford: Yes, of course! A lady needs her beauty sleep!

(Mrs. Bradford kisses Eva’s forehead and then Eva heads upstairs to bed. Eva opens her bedroom door, steps inside, and slowly closes the door. She drops to her knees and bursts into tears.)

CHAPTER 6:

INT. BRADFORD HOME

(Mrs. Bradford is waiting in the living room, quite excited. Eva walks down the stairs, wearing a beautiful fiery red dress. Her hair is tied up in a bun and she is wearing quite a bit of makeup. Mrs. Bradford stands up and puts her hand over her heart.)

Mrs. Bradford: You look stunning!

Eva: Do I have to wear all this makeup?

Mrs. Bradford: Of course!

Eva: It makes me feel fake.

Mrs. Bradford: Eva, do you ever stop complaining? Can’t you just understand that this is what is best for you?

Eva: …Yeah, mom. I’m sorry.

(Mrs. Bradford smiles and begins fixing Eva’s hair, much to her annoyance.)

EXT. BRADFORD’S HOME-EVENING

(Charles and Eva exit the house and walk up to the carriage. Mrs. Bradford, happily, watches them leave. The horses begin to pull the carriage.)

Charles: Would you care for some wine?

Eva: Um, no thank you.

(Charles pours himself a glass of wine and then takes a sip.)

Charles: So, how long have you lived here?

Eva: A while.

Charles: …Could you be more specific?

Eva: …7 years.

Charles: Wow, that’s quite a long time. Where did you use to live?

Eva: The capital. My dad’s a knight and when he left for the war, we had no reason to stay. Nor did we have the money to stay there, for that matter. So, my mother found a smaller home that cost less. It tore her apart inside to “downgrade.”

(Eva giggles and Charles laughs, as well.)

Charles: Yeah, you’re mother… she does seem a bit high strung.

Eva: I’m not sure you know the half of it.

(They laugh, seemingly having a good time. Outside the carriage a dark figure is stalking the carriage from the rooftops. He is leaping from roof to roof, keeping a close watch on the carriage. He stops near a lamppost, revealing himself to be Daniel.)

Charles: Are you cold?

Eva: A little.

(Charles pulls a blanket off the floor and covers her up.)

Eva: …Thanks.

(Eva blushes and smiles at Charles.)

Charles: No problem. So, do you like it here or did you prefer the capital?

Eva: I like both, but I prefer it here.

Charles: Really? Is there any particular reason?

Eva: …Yeah, five of them.

(Eva looks away and Charles looks at her, confused.)

INT. BRADFORD’S HOME

(Eva strolls in through the door. Her mother stands up and looks at her, overcome with excitement.)

Mrs. Bradford: So, how’d it go?

Eva: I don’t like him. Would it be alright if we tried someone else?

Mrs. Bradford: But, why?

Eva: I’d rather not talk about it. I’d just like it, if you could find someone else.

Mrs. Bradford: …I’ll find someone else.

Eva: Thank you.

(Eva walks up the stairs and into her room. Outside her room, Daniel is sitting up against the house, staring at the stars.)

CHAPTER 7:

INT. FOREST CLEARING-2 years later

(Daniel, Eva, Matt, and Rusty are now 17 years old. Ben is 14 years old and Jack is 20 years old. Jack and Daniel are sparring, while the rest of the group cheers them on.)

Matt: Come on, Dan, you got this!

Eva: Your shits weak, Daniel!

Ben: Come on, Jack! He wins every time, knock his ass out!

(Jack and Daniel both appear to be getting tired. Jack lunges at Daniel, but Daniel runs at him and slides underneath him. He gets up and wraps his arms around Jack’s back. He lifts him up and drops onto his back, dropping Jack to the ground. Daniel gets up and stands over Jack. He smiles and holds his hand out, helping him up.)

Daniel: You alright?

Jack: I hope so!

(They both laugh, as the rest of the group helps Jack over to the nearby stump.)

Daniel: Sorry, man! I got carried away!

Jack: It’s all good, bro.

(They high five and bring it in.)

Daniel: So, Jack and I are done. Anyone else up for a little fun?

Ben: I got Matt!

Daniel: I don’t know, buddy. I’m pretty sure he’s eaten food that weighs more than you!

Matt: I wouldn’t doubt it!

(They all laugh and then pause looking at Rusty.)

Daniel: Damn, Rusty’s got jokes!

(They all continue laughing, enjoying their time together.)

Eva: I’d love to stick around guys, but I got to head home. I’ve got another “date” tonight. Mom’s gonna have a cow, if I’m late again.

Matt: Alright, see ya around, Eva!

The rest of the group: Yeah, see ya around!

(Eva smiles, waves to her friends, and exits the clearing.)

INT. BRADFORD’S HOME-EVENING

(Eva is standing in her living room, clothed in an exquisite turquoise dress, with her hair tied up in a bun, and her face covered in make-up. Her mother is admiring her attire, when she steps closer and puts both of her hands on Eva’s cheeks.)

Mrs. Bradford: Eva, you look amazing! Please, stop letting this all go to waste. We’ve been doing this for 2 years! You’re 17 and it’s time that you finally settle down and start a family.

Eva: Yeah, mom. I’ll do what I can.

(A knock is heard at the door, so Eva opens it. A dark-haired man, with a thick beard, and a fine tuxedo is standing at the door.)

Man: Greetings, madam.

Mrs. Bradford: Good evening, Gordon. I hope you both have a wonderful night.

Gordon: I plan on it, ma’am.

(She takes Gordon’s hand. They get in a horse and carriage and head off down the road. Daniel leaps from the roof of Eva’s house to the neighbor’s house, following the carriage.)

INT. LOCAL RESTAURANT

(Eva and her “fiancée” are sitting in the restaurant, enjoying the fine cuisine. Gordon appears to be quite infatuated with her, however she remains uninterested. He chugs down his champagne, not taking his eyes off of her.)

Gordon: So, I must say, Elfa.

Eva: Eva.

Gordon: Yes, of course. I must say, you are really quite beautiful.

(Eva looks at him, with a fake smile.)

Eva: Thank you, ever so much.

(Gordon takes a bite out of his food, as he stares at Eva’s chest. Eva scoots to the side and pulls her coat over her chest, to block his view. She rolls her eyes and looks away, disgusted.)

EXT. RESTAURANT

(Eva and Gordon are walking out of the restaurant. Eva looks around, confused.)

Eva: Ummmm, where’s the horse and carriage?

Gordon: I figured it would be more romantic, if we walked. Don’t you?

Eva: I suppose, but I would prefer it if we could ride home.

Gordon: Oh come on, it’ll be fun. We can stare at the stars….and stuff.

(They begin walking down the moonlit road.)

Eva: I’m pretty sure, that’s not all you want to stare at.

Gordon: Hm?

Eva: Nothing, I was just clearing my throat.

(They continue walking down the road for a while. Suddenly, Gordon stops her and signals toward the moon.)

Gordon: Isn’t it beautiful, Sheva?

Eva: My name’s Eva.

Gordon: Huh?

Eva: …Never mind. Yes, it really is beautiful.

(Gordon begins kissing Eva’s neck. Eva gently pushes him away.)

Gordon: What’s the problem?

Eva: I don’t like you doing that.

Gordon: Doing what? We’re engaged aren’t we?

Eva: Well, yeah, but…

Gordon: But? Just loosen up, a bit. Everything’s alright.

(Gordon begins rubbing her shoulders and tries to kiss her neck again, but she pushes him off.)

Eva: Knock it off! You’re drunk!

Gordon: Oh, shut up, you prude!

(Gordon grabs her, but Eva struggles to break free. Eva’s heel breaks and she stumbles to the ground. Daniel leaps down from the roof, having caught up with them. He rushes in between Gordon and Eva. He punches Gordon in the face, causing him to stumble backwards. He ignores Gordon and crouches down to check on Eva.)

Daniel: Are you okay?

Eva: Yeah, I think so. My ankle just hurts a little.

Gordon: Who the hell are you?!

(Daniel stands up, glaring at Gordon.)

Daniel: Back off, pal. I’m not gonna warn you, again.

Gordon: Who do you think you are? Do you know who I am?!

Daniel: No I don’t know who you are and I don’t need to.

(Gordon goes to tackle Daniel, but he knees him in the stomach. Gordon quickly falls to the ground out of breath. Daniel points at Eva.)

Daniel: That is not how you treat a woman!

(Daniel turns and helps Eva to her feet. He scoops her up and begins carrying her down the road. Eva blushes and lays her head against his shoulder.)

Daniel: I’m sorry I wasn’t here sooner. I should’ve been faster.

Eva: Its fine, Daniel. All that matters is that you’re here now. Thank you.

(Daniel smiles and continues to walk down the road.)

Daniel: You mind if I say something?

Eva: What?

Daniel: You look a lot better without make-up.

EXT. BRADFORD’S HOME

(Daniel stops at the door.)

Eva: I should be fine from here.

Daniel: Are you sure?

Eva: Yeah.

(Daniel sets her down, slowly. She wraps her arms around his neck and hugs him, tightly.)

Eva: Thank you, so much for being there, tonight.

Daniel: Anytime.

(They let go of each other.)

Eva: Good night.

Daniel: ‘Night.

(Eva turns and enters her house. She sees that the candles and lamps have been turned off, signaling that her mother must be in bed. She slowly walks up the steps and enters her room. She lights a candle, lighting up her room. She walks over to the window and looks down. She sees Daniel, leaning against the house. She smiles. She changes out of her dress and into more comfortable clothes. She opens the window, causing Daniel to turn around and look up.)

Eva: How long are you going to stand out there, before you realize that you’re welcome up here?

Daniel: Oh, no, I wasn’t!

Eva: Haha! Just get up here.

(Eva reaches her arms out the window. Daniel takes a few steps back. He runs up and grabs onto her hands. She pulls him up and he climbs into the window, stepping into her room. He looks around, taking it all in.)

Daniel: You have a really nice room.

Eva: Thanks.

(Eva sits down on her bed.)

Eva: Sit down. I’m sure you’re tired from carrying me all that way.

(Daniel nervously walks over to the bed and slowly sits down, smiling at Eva.)

Eva: I think that after this, my mom’s probably going to kick me out.

Daniel: Are you sure?

Eva: Yeah. I don’t think that there’s anything else I can do.

Daniel: Just tell her that the guy was a sleezeball.

Eva: She’s not going to believe me. She’s going to think that I’m just making more excuses.

(Eva lies down on the bed, staring at the ceiling. Daniel lies on his side, staring at her. But, unlike Gordon, he’s staring at her face.)

Eva: Oh well. Now, I can finally go live with you guys.

Daniel: Eva, please don’t be so quick to give up.

Eva: I’m not giving up. I’m finally standing up for myself. I never wanted this. I want you. I mean…I want you all. I want to come live with you guys. I won’t have a care in the world.

Daniel: Eva, you think it’s so easy, but it’s not. You will have cares. You’ll care about when you’re next meal is, you’ll care about how you look, how you smell. It’s not always fun and games.

Eva: …I get that. But, what other choice do I have.

Daniel: Talk to her. At least then you’ll have tried. If she still kicks you out… then we’ll go from there.

(Daniel lies down next to Eva.)

INT. BRADFORD HOME-MORNING

(Daniel and Eva are fast asleep in her bed, with their arms wrapped around each other. Downstairs, Mrs. Bradford is tearing open letters. She reads one, as tears pour down her face. She cups her mouth and continues to read. She hurries up the stairs.)

Mrs. Bradford: Eva! Eva, wake up! I have wonderful news!

(She reaches the top of the steps and reaches for the door handle.)

CHAPTER 8:

Mrs. Bradford: Eva!

(Mrs. Bradford turns the handle and flings the door open. She sees Daniel and instantly drops the letter, dumbfounded.)

Mrs. Bradford: What in God’s name?!

(Daniel and Eva quickly wake up from their deep sleep, jumping out from under the covers.)

Mrs. Bradford: Eva, what is he… who is he?!

Eva: Get out of here, before she kills you!

(Daniel quickly gets up and rushes over to the window.)

Mrs. Bradford: Get back here, you disgusting little freak!

(Daniel opens the window and leaps to the ground, tucking and rolling.)

Eva: Mom, calm down!

(Mrs. Bradford quickly rushes down the steps and out the door.)

Mrs. Bradford: Guards! Guards!

Eva: Shit!

(Eva hurries down the stairs and out the door, rushing into the woods. She soon enters the forest clearing, where she sees Daniel standing around his sleeping friends. He appears to be trying to relax and calm down.)

Daniel: Eva! What are you doing here?!

Eva: You guys got to get out of here, now!

(The group slowly starts to wake up, from the noise.)

Ben: Hey, Eva!

Eva: There’s no time for that! Just get going!

Matt: What’s going on?

Eva: My mom’s getting the guards! She’s gonna tell them everything! They’ll get you for trespassing, they could find out about the thievery and you assaulting Gordon! You just need to get out of here, immediately!

(Daniel looks around at his friends.)

Daniel: You heard her, let’s get going!

(The group gets up and follows Daniel out of the woods, not one of them looking back. Eva quickly catches her breath and then exits the clearing, heading home.)

INT. BRADFORD HOME

(Eva enters the house, to find her mom sitting on the couch. Her mom quickly rises up from the couch, glaring at Eva. But, before she has the chance to say anything, Eva begins her tirade.)

Eva: No! I don’t want to hear anything from you! I’m tired of putting up with your shit! Daniel is my friend and you just chased him out my window! But, despite things like that, he sticks up for you! But, you wouldn’t know that, would you?! You are so overbearing, it’s driving me insane! I would’ve run away a long time ago, but he stopped me! He wanted us to get along! But, it’s far too late for that! I’m out of here!

(Eva storms out of the house, but her mother quickly follows her out the door.)

Mrs. Bradford: Eva! Get back here, this instant!

(Eva stops and turns around.)

Eva: No! For once in my life, I’m standing up to you! You are so selfish! You don’t care what’s best for me; you just want what’s best for you!

Mrs. Bradford: You are so disrespectful! You don’t realize all of the things I do for you!

Eva: Of course I do! But, all of the things you’ve done for me don’t make up for all of the things that you haven’t done for me! You tried to force me to get married to men I’ve never even met; that’s something I never wanted!

Mrs. Bradford: Most girls, far younger than you, are already married!

Eva: Why do I have to be like them?! For your information, I don’t want to be like them! I want to live my life, not theirs!

Mrs. Bradford: I am your mother! Your life is my responsibility!

Eva: Not anymore, it isn’t.

(Eva turns around and walks away.)

Mrs. Bradford: …I’ll drop the trespassing charges.

(Eva stops and quickly turns around to face her mother.)

Eva: …What did you say?

Mrs. Bradford: I’ll drop the charges against the homeless boy. But, only on one condition.

Eva: Well, what is it?

Mrs. Bradford: Your father’s back from the war.

(Eva’s eyes widen, with excitement.)

Mrs. Bradford: He’s returned to the capital, in order to train new recruits. I got a letter from him, asking that we return to the capital to stay with him, while he’s back.

(Tears rise from the bottom of Eva’s eyes.)

Eva: Dad’s back…

Mrs. Bradford: I’m moving back to the capital. If you come with me, then I’ll drop the charges. This way, we can all be a family, again.

Eva: …You promise you’ll drop the charges?

Mrs. Bradford: Of course.

(Eva looks away from her mother, still angry. She walks past her mother, heading back to their home.)

EXT. BRADFORD HOME-MORNING

(Eva and her mother are getting in a horse and carriage, as the driver loads their luggage. He appears to be struggling, as he attempts to load a heavy suitcase. Eva notices this and quickly hurries over to help him.)

Mrs. Bradford: Eva, there’s no point in helping the “help.”

(Mrs. Bradford chuckles, while Eva struggles not to argue with her. Eva gets in the carriage, shortly before the driver. The horses begin pulling the carriage down the road, as Eva stares at their old house.)

EXT. THE CAPITAL OF BENEGAIA, SERIAH-EARLY EVENING

(Daniel and the group are walking down a long country road.)

Matt: So, what do you think the capital will be like?

Ben: Eva said it was amazing!

Daniel: I’m sure it is.

Jack: I hope so. Considering how far we’ve had to walk just to get there!

Ben: Rusty, quit your complaining!

(Rusty shrugs. Matt looks at Daniel and sees that he doesn’t seem very thrilled. He puts his hand on Daniel’s shoulder, causing Daniel to look up from the ground and instead look at Matt.)

Matt: I’m sorry.

Daniel: It’s not your fault, it’s mine. I should’ve just made sure she was okay and then left. Because, of my mistake, we’ll never see her again. Not only that, but I’m sure that I’ve put a great distance between her and her mother.

Jack: Stop being so hard on yourself, man. It’s not like you mean to do any of that. It just, kind of, happened.

Daniel: I guess you’re right.

(They walk up over the hill, to see a magnificent city, bathing in the light of the setting sun.)

The group: Wow…

(They all stand still, for a moment, staring at the wonderful city.)

Ben: It’s humongous!

Jack: This has got to be the biggest city, we’ve ever been to!

Daniel: I wouldn’t be surprised if it was the biggest city in the world.

Matt: It’s breathtaking…

Ben: Rusty’s right! What are we waiting for?!

(They all take off running down the road, happy and ready to experience the city life.)

INT. SERIAH

(The group is walking down the streets, mesmerized by the sights. People are chatting, people are making purchases, kids are playing, cats and dogs are roaming the streets and alleyways. The group finds themselves, a bit out of place, but excited nonetheless. However, one thing about this city that they have yet to realize is that Eva and her mother are in a horse and carriage riding down the neighboring road.)
