What sort of Psychs did you prefer to use? I stuck with slash and fire, myself...

Slash and fire were also my favorites. I also like the street jam psychs. It was funny at E3 I was playing TWEWY in one of the long lines and the noise of the convention was activating my streetjam psych Oh, and I usually have some sort of bullet psych too.

When it comes down to psyches themselves, generally I also like the Pyrokinesis and Slash pins, but having a Thunder Pawn and an Aqua Barrier kicking around were pretty nice too. In terms of favourite Pins I'd have to go with Anguis. As for favourite sets, definitely the Black Planet series.

I'll just give you the pins I use.

Shockwave is a good slasher to me, and when it runs out, I use Rakuyo (a pin with the Vulcan Uppercut Psych, which is a rising arc) and Fresh Line (Grave Marker Psych, which is a downward stab) to stay physical and close. When I want some distance, I use Lightning Pawn (Spark Core Psych, which makes balls of lightning that homes in on the nearest enemy and attacks it) and Ice Risers (Piercing Pillar Psych, which is the same as Ice Blow, but I evolved it so it now shoots off 3 pillars instead of 1). Cure Drink is just a little bit of a back-up just in case I start running out of HP. It's a strategy that works with me.

I can't remember what my attack pins were but stuff like Aqua Barrier and reloading Cure Pins saved me in battle.

Slashing pins were my overall favorite. I also really liked using bullet pins and thunder pins.

Yoshimitsu and Thunder Rook are a good combination since the reboot time essentially balances out the other one's use time.  And the Entanglement psychs are pretty good too.  And if you can get the Cat set, then they all reboot faster, though you need friends for that.
