I get that something just doesn't match the hype the fans give it. When they think something is cool enough, of course they'll wind up blowing it out of proportion. Then, of course, the haters (or the indifferent) will come to the rescue, being the only ones intelligent enough to see that [X] isn't as good as people say it is. "No," they'll say, "[X] has plenty of flaws! Get your heads out of your asses, it doesn't match the hype!"

Okay. So what does match the hype? What is good as people say it is?

Nothing. There is not a single thing that's as good as the fans say it is. On the flip side, there are very few things that are as bad as what the haters rage about. Final Fantasy is awful about this. FF# is either the best title in the franchise, or a piece of shit that takes attention away from good games like FF(their favorite). The people who cite something as "overrated" are usually gonna be the ones who hate (or just don't care about) it. But, everyone hates (or doesn't care about) a certain something. Doesn't that make everything overrated? If nothing is as good as the fans say, what's the point of claiming it as such?

Despite it being an arbitrary term, people slap "overrated" on anything they don't like that has a huge fanbase, like it's some kind of fad. FFVII is the biggest target. Being the most popular in the franchise, it's obviously the most overrated by how many people tote it as Best Game Evar!!!1 But if another game got the title of Best Game Evar!!!1, wouldn't that be the overrated one instead?

tl;dr: Shut up about calling something "overrated." It's a pointless term since everything popular is blown out of proportion by its fans.

Thank you so much for this. I would like it but I am quotaed.

There is not a single thing that's as good as the fans say it is.

Transformers,

Kingdom Hearts,

Courage the Cowardly Dog,

Mr.Bean?

The point of being the one to call something overrated is really just a reality check, at least for me.

Here we have a conversation between two fans of the same game:

Dude, did you see Skyward Sword? Why do they even try to make Ocarina of Time again?

I know, they're never going to make a game as good as Ocarina of Time. It was the best game ever made, so.. y'know.

I know, and they just try to keep making it again and again, it's not gonna happen Nintendo, you can't copy perfection!

They should just re-release Ocarina of Time 3D. That's all the people want from them, is the best game ever.

(Now a third person walks in while the conversation is still a mile high)

Ocarina of Time is overrated.

(Aaaaand now we're back down to earth)

The only reason to say that kind of thing is because when you're talking about video games and people think that Ocarina of Time, or FFVII, or something else is the BEST GAME EVER, then you know all they're going to do is compare every game to that game that moulded their standards.

By the way, I like Ocarina of Time, but I think Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword are superior to it in every conceivable way.

This. So much this. The rest of your post highlighted the idea of overrated perfectly but this last sentence just...makes me glad.

I think you guys have missed the point...

Oh, I get it. My attention was just caught by some of the opinions here.

Yup. Even those. Doesn't matter how much I like KH and Courage; someone still hates 'em and will call them overrated because of people like us who treat it as something awesome. KH moreso, though. Courage doesn't have nearly the same fanbase as KH, or at least it's not as vocal.

People try to treat it as a reality check, but in practice, it usually comes across to me as code for "I dislike this game and I dislike so many people love it when I don't." Going by the Ocarina or FFVII examples, if you wanna say something isn't as good as someone says it is, why not point out why it's not? Maybe the gameplay could be better or the story was shakily executed at points. If someone is so convinced [X] is Best Game Evar!!!1, do you think saying it doesn't match the hype will chance their minds?

It's uncommon for fans to admit their favorite game doesn't match the hype. You and I are similar with Ocarina and FFVII, respectively, far more people than not intend it as a criticism.

Agreed. The term "over-rated" has become a sort of instant go-to in lieu of rational argument. Over-rated itself simply refers to the fact that a lot of people like it, not specifying what is actually the problem.

"Final Fantasy XIII is over-rated" simply means that a lot of people like it while I don't.

"Final Fantasy XIII has a cast of unsympathetic characters, a plot that meanders to the point of over-complication, and a setting that feels to sci-fi to be Fantasy" tells listeners what you feel about the game while also telling them why, and has much more merit to it.

I will admit that people blowing things out of proportion and worshipping them does make me hate them. Like Portal. I thought portal was okay when I played it, I walked away saying "Yeah, that was pretty fun." Next thing I know, people are saying it's the BEST GAEM EVAR. Like... seriously? A 5-hour-long physics simulator is the best game ever? What the hell?

As for criticism, there's plenty to be had:

Portal is a very short very shallow physics demo that's basically just an excuse to show off the Source engine. There's only 1 character in the game that has any role at all, and her development is basically "the girl who says random stuff to be funny."

Ocarina of Time is an overall bloated game with hardly any depth (I'll use that term again) and basically ends up carting the player around to... is it eight? Eight temples that really do not vary in any significant way. Some of them change atmosphere a bit, like Jabu-Jabu, but most of the dungeons are just underground catacombs. The game also served to royally screw the timeline of the series single-handedly, but thenagain the timeline splits yielded good games. Overall the game feels dull for a Zelda game, as well as lonely, as there aren't very many NPCs even in large villages. The game also had a bad habit of not telling you what you had to do, even with a floating GPS yelling in your ear.

Goldeneye 007 was a cash-in movie game on a console whose controller is ruinous to the idea of an FPS.

...however, no criticism would ever reach the ear of somebody who honestly thinks these are the best games ever made. You just can't argue with them, because they "KNOW" they're right. xD
