I know everyone says he died at the end of Birth by Sleep, but I still have my doubts. When Ventus destroys the X-Blade and supposedly vanitas along with it, is it so much of a stretch to believe that Vanitas might have survived? If he was simply weakened and forced back into a corner of Ventus's heart, then his return might not be relegated to the past. I mean, we all know that Sora saw Vanitas in his first encounter with young Xehanort, and everyone assumes that means Xehanort took Vanitas's heart out of the past and now has it with him. But if Vanitas was still in Ventus's heart during the time it was with Sora, than it could be an explanation for this vision as well. Sorry if I'm missing any plot points that completely debunk this, I just wanted to give my thoughts on how Vanitas could return in Kingdom Hearts III.

Sora saw Vanitas because it was Ven's heart reacting to seeing Xehanort. But I'm sure we haven't seen the last of Vanitas. People love him to much.

 

Oh and here is a quote from the ultimania interview.

 

Nomura: "They did so in order to tempt Sora’s heart and have it fall to the darkness. In the story it also talks about how abandoning the self leads to losing the heart. When you see Vanitas (the dark half of Ventus who appeared in KHBBS) overlay Young Xehanort for a moment, that represents Ventus’ heart reacting inside Sora."

I think he'll probably come back around kh3 if he returns. Would be the perfect timing if he does imo.

I think if somehow Ventus get restored so will be Vanitas and then I see a fight coming.

What I don't get is that even though Sora saw Vanitas, he really didn't ask who or what it was. He just kinda made a face and yeah lol

 

Anyways, I think he will come back for Kh3 as some sort of boss.

Or, now that they've introduced time travel, Vanitas could still have died, but a past living version of himself could be brought into the future.

Agreed, he will likely end up being one of the 13 darknesses - seeing as Vanitas fits the bill perfectly. I don't believe it is so much a stretch to revive him, and as Dusk says - it'll likely be for the fans and he won't see any major action. I also agree that if Ventus returns, so will Vanitas - I'm hoping so because I wouldn't mind seeing Vanitas square off against either Sora or Ventus (again).

But yeah, I always thought that Vanitas went back to being part of Ven's heart after the X-blade was destroyed, they were already kinda merged anyways.

He'll probably be one of the thirteen darknesses as people have already said.

The Vanitas that appeared besides Young Xehanort was a reaction of Ventus's Heart. But he may be back, only time will tell.

Hmmm, well, it depends what one means by "died" as death is ruled by Nomura logic here. You die when your soul leaves your body and Ven had literally beat Vanitas's body to near death and then when they fused and Vanitas's body disappeared, his heart entered Ven in the same vein that ME's entered Terra. By KH definition Vanitas "died" when he fussed with Ven. 

 

There are a couple common theories in regards to Vanitas's existence. 

 

1)The remains of Vanitas's heart is hiding out in Ven's heart still, slowly getting stronger along with Ven as Sora's heart is nurturing both.

 

2)When he was defeated he lost a chunk of his heart to Ven but the rest made it out and is hiding out in someone else's heart getting stronger e.g. Xehanort.   

 

3)The only thing that's left of him is sense of self or thoughts but he lost all of his heart to Ven.

 

4)He dead. Only way to see him again is if he gets brought back via time travel.

 

Either way I don't think we've seen the last of him. He was too important to MX's plans to let go of so easily and has been all but acknowledged as being one of the Seekers of Darkness. 

Yeah I argee with all of you...what if he fights Riku? Like to prove himself that he has full control over darkness... So that's when he takes a extra step into controlling darkness, by being able to control other peoples darkness or something.

Of course he's not.

If he died then Ven probs will die too since Vanitas is a part of him.
