I don't think so. Lea trained right before this little clash to get a keyblade, so that he can summon one doesn't have to do with this event. Also the game (KH3D) made his Intentions a bit mysterious at the beginning and in the End it was clear: He's now totally a good one... So why would he suddenly be bad (again)? If that's the case in KH3, everything Lea-related in KH3D was unnecessary.

Nomura already addressed why Lea can wield  - he went to Yen Sid and got the ceremony . He then underwent training with Merlin and the faeries in a special time chamber to speed up the process. Secondly Lea blocked  the attack with his chackrams AND FIRE. Finally , when Xehanort smiles its when Xigbar/Braig told the old coot to do something and he sent Saix/Isa to attack since he was proven to control his vessels at will..He knew what a shock it would be to possess Isa to attack Lea considering they used to be childhood best friends.Also ,a potential vessel needs to be consumed by darkness to be a successful vessel which Lea is obviously not.

When you think about it, Axel's character arc essentially concluded at the end of Kingdom Hearts II. Lea was brought back and made an important character because everyone likes him, he was given a keyblade because everyone likes him. But this had me worried that he would become another useless character, and wouldn't get any development or a compelling story in Kingdom Hearts III. So in a sense, I kind of want what you're saying to be true, even if the idea of having Lea as a villain after everything we've seen of him is somewhat outlandish.

I have the game.....and what you typed doesn't look like the scene that I saw in my game.

That "spell ball thing" is his heart, and they wouldn't've wasted their time developing Lea if he was just going to be a bad guy again

Well as we know people like Braig and Isa will become  MX and they will get a keyblade too. So i think that as Lea did not have any intention in continuing with  Xehanort's plan he is not a bad guy . As far as this event you say is considered he just defended Sora by hitting the dark ball and in a funny way,in my opinion, reminded Braig that his name is Lea.

I thought he smiled because he was using isa kid a puppet to attack lea, who was isas childhood best friend.

Lea was looking for isa when they awoke so I doubt he knew he was a vessel, MXs smile was most likely him taking joy in leas shock and having the who former bffs clash. He probably hoped the shock of isa would make it easy for him to take Sora out of his hands

hmm, I guess I must have misinterpreted the scene. I kinda based it off memory, I hadn't seen the scene prior to posting, and I should have. Idk, but I didn't know about the whole thing Nomura said about Axel training with Merlin. I don't think that was ever mentioned in the game, so that's why I came up with the theory. Oh well, it's nice to know Axel won't become "dark" again, at least not from that.
