I really like Valentine's, but not really for the lovey dovey stuff. I can't get too excited about that part when my love story is a tragedy. But I didn't realize Valentine's Day was going to be a tragedy too! I just like it for the sweets. Who doesn't love a holiday dedicated to chocolates and flowers? It's a good excuse to do what Oishii does; bake delicious desserts.
So, a while ago my Sensei asked if I would make a recipe from a dessert recipe book I got at a Japanese bookstore. I decided to make a delicious blueberry cheese tart. Since we meet every Thursday, today would be a perfect day to give it to him. But I had eight slices, so I decided that I would give pieces to two of my friends I see on Thursdays too.
Well, I got an email about an hour after I made the tart from Sensei. He had to cancel our meeting. I was sad but not too surprised since he's a very busy person. I still had my friends to give my tart to.
Then I get a text from my friend Molly. She wouldn't be coming to the Japanese Club meeting because one of her patients was having difficulty coming out of anesthesia (poor puppy). I sighed, and ended up not going to the meeting either.
I was still holding out for my gaming buddy Axel (yes, I'm using false names but this does suit him). I was getting ready to head to campus and throw him a text when I get a text from him first. He wishes me Happy Valentine's Day... and then proceeds to tell me that he is dropping out for a semester and won't be back until the next semester. And of course, by then, I'll be studying abroad in Japan, so I won't get to see him again until fall of 2014... Shoot, KH3 will probably come out before I see him again (oh, what am I saying, of course it won't ).
So now I have blueberry cheese tarts sitting in my fridge that I could give away... Fuking stupid holiday! Why must the universe conspire against me and my sweets! I made them for the special people in my life, and the universe would even go as far as driving my friend 200 miles away just so he can never taste their blueberry goodness.
So that was my disappointing Valentine's Day. Hope yours was better.
