I recently started playing FFX, but there's one thing that bothers me.

How can Tidus, or Rikku breathe underwater for such a long time?

Is there any explanation about this?

Tidus was a sportstar. He's father too. Maybe he born with big lung .And Rikku... The Al Bheds can this too. Interesting.

Tidus is a fish and so is Rikku.

Well If Donkey Kong can breath underwater forever(DKC series and DK64) then I won't be surprised if mister Zanarkand boy can

They have a second set of lungs connected to their anus.

I thought they were holding their breaths for a really long time?

There is a difference between realism and logic.

 

Some stories can be as fantasy as they can be but they can have a really good logical progression for the story and character development

 

And some even though they might have the most realistic of settings the progression of the story and characters might make no sense at all

Tidus and Wakka are trained blitzball players so they learnt to hold their breaths for a long period of time, and Im pretty sure Riku had a reason just cant remember

Actually,according to X-2 illogical plot..Tidus doesn't exist at all.

I hear that the FFX Ultimania states Blitzball players manipulate pyreflies to breath underwater, pyreflies also being responsible for things like Aeons, Fiends, and magic.  So yeah, Final Fantasy magic.
