I'm not a Lucina user, but I know a lot of people on here are.

Switch to Marth and you'll win.

On a more serious note, jump and forward air. It's the bread and butter attack for Lucina. Up air too if you can land it for a KO off the top of the stage.

Since Lucina has a normalized sword, you can hit the opponent from any place of your sword and it will do the same amount of damage.

Forward Smash is also great. Up Smash is hard to land, but it's also good.

Try to predict when your opponent is shielding your attacks, since she is very vulnerable when she lands on the ground after an attack.

Mactar Jr now enters the fray. James begins the training process.

Any one have any tips for beating Toon Link? My brother is completely infuriating with this character, and I just can't beat him. I play Robin, but general tips would be fine too.

He makes heavy use of all three projectiles (boomerang, arrows, and bombs) to basically keep me from ever getting close enough to attack with my sword. But all three of these also out speed (El/Arc)Thunder/Thoron and Arc Fire. Plus, his projectiles (especially his arrows) generally have greater range than mine. And if I do get close, his sword attacks also seem to be faster, hitting me, and by the time I've recovered from the hit he's made distance between us again. When in the air, he tends to use the attack where Toon Link falls with the blade aiming downward, which always beats my upward smash, and pushes me back if I wait on the ground...

I'm sure that some of it is because he's got faster reflexes than me, but I win maybe one of every ten fights against Toon Link. I'm not an absolutely terrible Robin player, I can beat level 9 cpu's consistently, and have a pretty even win/lose ration to the other characters my brother plays. It's just Toon Link...

Shield is your friend. This is a general tip. Shield is absolutely overpowered.

If he's aggressive with his sword,

Shield when he's smashing, shield when he's using a down air.

After he hits your shield, grab him. You can grab him out of shield, so don't let go of shield when trying to grab, or else you may miss the grab.

To build up damage, down throw and up air. To KO, back throw him off the edge.

You can also smash attack him after he hits your shield, but it's a bit more risky.

If he keeps you away with projectiles,

Mix up your approaches. Jump over the projectiles, walk and shield, spotdodge, roll, or just play keep-a-way until you feel comfortable in trying to attack him. Try to predict his projectiles. Don't let him get a projectile out when you get to him. Always keep up the pressure. Even if you miss, he'll be hesitant.

Again, I found down throw and up air is effective when racking up damage, and even KOing if you're lucky.

Up smash on Robin is pretty bad. The hitbox is very small, and it doesn't do a lot of damage considering how risky it is. Don't try and hit him while you're on the ground and he's in the air. Try following him up, or wait him out. You don't have to try and capitalize on everything he does. If he lands on the ground far away from you, throw him an Arcthunder/Thoron.

Thanks. ^_^ Especially the shield, didn't know I could grab out of it.

Yep, shield + A is a grab, which makes grabbing out of your shield such a nice convenience.

Sakurai says Mewtwo DLC release date to be announced soon:

The level 9 CPUs are pretty good in this game. 1-frame reaction times. With a broken C-Stick they frustrate me really firetrucking bad.

...that sounds like bad AI

Or, you know, a good challenge. Easy AI is stupid, it's not challenging without tough ones. Not to mention you can lower their levels, anyway.

frame perfect reactions go beyond human reaction, that's about as artificial as 'challenge' gets

if that's what makes the AI hard, then the only reason you can win at all is because the AI fails in some other way

They're not that difficult. I usually win against them. There's definitely not that little reaction time against them.

...if it doesn't have one frame reaction time, why didn't you say that, rather than try to argue that it's a challenge?

Because I didn't realize that part when I first read it.

I'd say the better question is why you stick around on this thread even though you've made it clear multiple times that you dislike this game, and insist on getting us upset because we like a game that you don't.

I mostly check in for news about Mewtwo

If you seem to do nothing but tell us that this game was rushed and horrible, why are you interested in the DLC...?

well everybody assumes I hate the game because I say bad things about it, but it's just my least favourite of the Smash Bros series, so it ranks higher than a lot of other games still

I criticize Smash Bros because it's a series I love and hold to high standards

It's because you've never said anything that would allow us to assume otherwise. You haven't said a single good thing about the game, all you've done is talk about how rushed and poorly made it is.

that's definitely not true, I've said multiple times that this game has the best gameplay in the series. That's a pretty major positive

the problem is that that's all the game exceeds at (that and the stages are better than Brawl's) so there's not much else to say. Eight player Smash is fun. Online connection is somewhat good.

There's not much else to say. It's a lacking entry in the series

I've never seen that, I've only seen you talk about how other games like Melee are much better than this one. You can prove me wrong, but I definitely don't remember you saying that the game has the best gameplay. You've made it sound like it has the worst, with how often you've criticized the game.

And this is why I avoided saying anything, because I knew it was gonna start a back and forth discussion like this...

Well I'm not exactly invested enough to search through this nearly 200 page topic to find quotes, but I've had this exact conversation with enough people in this topic to know that I've said positive things in this thread before. People just tend to ignore that

But yeah, Smash 4. Worst Smahs game, still good. Once I order my gamecube adapter I'm going to play it a lot more, provided I can wrangle my friends into it. I'm looking forward to the Mewtwo DLC because I want to troll people with his Side B (he'd better still have his side B Sakurai I swear to god)

heavens, not back and forth discussion, that might even be stimulating!

So, I'm a little late on it, but James continues his training with Mactar Jr. He's trying to exploit Mactar's weaknesses in hopes that he learns to counter them.
