The wind blew softly over the island. Besides the soft swaying of the trees there was little to disturb the idyllic serenity here. The island stretched out for miles, but at the coasts there was nothing to see but water. The island, like the universe in which it existed, was nearly empty, the remnants of life clung, decaying, to its shores and its trees and its fields, but the yells of excitement, of fear, of courage that has once complimented the sound of the wind ha since faded to echoes. Today, however, that changed. Today life returned to the universe. The only question is; what kind of universe would it return to?

"C'mon, get up!"

"All of you, wake up."

"Rise and shine, it's a new day."

Far away voices entered the hazy minds of those sleeping on the island.

Lying on the shore of a short beach was Seraphim Valentine, Derik Absolon, and Samantha Allison, and Rodin Seefull. The wind blew over them as they lay sprawled over the sand in close proximity to each other. Just as they had been placed. Next to the beach was a mix of jungle and swamp that went deeper into the mainland. Besides that the beach was mostly barren. A wrecked fishing boat was rusted and decaying within walking distance, but nothing more. The waves lapped up on the shore softly...

Lying in the middle of an airstrip surrounded by jungle was a different group. Rusted machine parts lay strewn about, and any sign of activity at the airstrip had long since faded. On the ground in the middle of the airstrip lay Alex Dimanche, Ferro al'Vere, and Hazimie Azhar Two desolate bunkers flanked the airstrip they were on, with a control tower at the end of the strip. Forest flanked the airstrip on all sides, with a single winding road leading out. The wind cut through the trees and sliced past the bunkers onto the airstrip. Only the wind and the trees provided any sound to the desolate military installation...

Deep in the jungle was a pair of rusted jeeps parked next to a crumbling house. The jeeps were long past functioning, and their engines were removed recently as well. The house sat surrounded by the trees with a single road leading somewhere further into the jungle. Inside the house were the four people; Rija Mors, Terry Frost, Henko Tenioenai, Koizumi Onnea, and Rin Nozomi Part of the roof of the house had caved in, and most of the belongings and furniture were gone. Remaining in the house were a few pots and pans, and single picture in an immaculate frame on a table in the room where the four people were laying. Silence pervaded the house...

The far away voices slowly awakened all of these people. The clouds in the blue skies above moved slowly; the morning was upon them. It was time to wake up and find the future...

"You know, you are really not helpful." Terry quipped at Veridyan's comment a out dealing with the drones.

His plasma rifle snapped up quickly as he fired a burst at the drone coming for him. As the drone reached him, Terry threw himself backwards, out of the way of the saw blades. He quickly rolled to the side, then up into a crouching position, firing another sustained burst at the drone, wrecking it's armor and causing it to crash.

"Tch. Had to be more dense..." Derik muttered, swimming down, he gripped the card and swam up.

(Time....I never have any.)

Rin quickly wield Kutabare, changing it into it's handgun form. She began shooting at the drone.

"When I'm fighting like this it reminds me of the games I've played...the games I've played where I wasn't Rin. The games where I was 'Chiko'...." Rin thought.

However, this wasn't a good time to think about her games. She changed the handgun into it's flamethrower mode, and launching it at the drone, immediately decenagrating it. Rin quickly ran to Henko's side.

"How was that? I can take up for myself...so stop taking up for me a lot." she snapped.

Derik emerged from the huge chemical pool, and was able to just get out of the vat when a transmission from Rytt came in.

"Okay, I just finished getting analysis back on the chemical. It was used during the civil war. It was a... Oh no..."

Whether he wanted to or not, Derik suddenly toppled to the ground.

"It's a poison and paralyzing agent combined. It was designed to lower enemy moral by paralyzing and slowly killing the host. It seems to have gotten through Derik's armor."

Pain spread throughout Derik's body and he was unable to move, except minor hand movements and speaking.

"We need to get him deeper into the facility, there's a chance they made a cure." Rytt sounded somewhat distraught. The door deeper into the facility was just in front of them.

"Use the keycard, and one of you will have to carry Derik, hurry!"

"God... Damn... I should be fine for a few hours, I've got some decent kidneys, but still, for someone like me to be immobilized sucks. Ferro, take the card carefully and let's go." Derik would have knocked himself silly for not recognising a substance like that at a glance, yet he didn't.

(I literally facepalmed because I had a sneaking feeling this would happen...)

"I'll carry him." Ferro said as he scooped Derik up and over his shoulder. Grabbing the key card, Ferro placed a portal by his feet and near the door for easy traversal of the room. "C'mon, let's get moving. Cure or no cure, standing her isn't going to help anything." Ferro passed through the portals and swiped the key card through the scanner. The doors opened and beyond them was. . .

Henko chuckled. "You were a few seconds shy of me trying." The hydraulics in his gauntlets clanked purely for the sake of intimidation. "Wanna lead is into any more danger Veridyan?" He asked. "It'd probably be for the best, restoring the human race and all."

Alex's wrist-console showed the molecular structure of the chemical affecting Derik, just sent by Rytt.

The doors opened and beyond them was. . .

Heat. So much heat. A robotic voice kept repeating the same phrase over and over and over again.

"Facility security compromised. All hallways locked-down with microwave defense mechanisms."

The door led into a hallway of sorts. Grates to walk on and instead of walls were small oddly shaped devices- microwave transmitters. About a 40 second sprint on the other side of the hallway was another door. With the grate for a floor and no ceiling or walls, creating a portal was impossible.

Rytt was the first to speak; "Microwave defense mechanisms, the bastards! They must have activated at some point over the past few years, and there's no way to shut them off except if you turn off the alert system in the security wing or shutting off the supply which is coming from the weapons silo. You'll have to hoof it I'm afraid, and with Derik... be fast."

The heat was already beginning to distort bits of their armor. A sprint through would leave the armor mostly disfigured, carrying a person through would leave it all but useless, meaning they wouldn't have much armor left nor would they be able to go into space.

"It's your call..." Rytt seem helpless. "Leave Derik or risk your armor's integrity. If you leave Derik, you may not make it back in time to give him the antidote, it's up to you, Ferro, Alex."

The last drone quickly retreated back into the vents.

"Of course I do, dog-boy!" Veridyan responded cheerfully to Henko. "Through that door in front of you all of you should be able to enter the weapons testing labs. Before you do, though, I want to inform you of an option you may consider taking. Next to the door is the console that controls the energy output for this silo. At the same time as this place stores weapons it also stores the energy supply tanks for all major defensive systems. Right now I'm detecting that Rytt's group is being forced to go through a microwave hallway that will severly damage their armor or maybe even injure them. If you go to that console before moving on and turn off the supply line for the microwave defense systems then they will be able to make it through unharmed..."

Veridyan was hesitant to say what came next.

"If you didn't, though, you could help to guarantee that Rytt's group would be at a disadvantage getting to Genesys. Talk it over, but you guys better make it quick, wherever you choose you need to move through the testing labs as soon as possible."

An automatic door stood info of Veridyan's group, with a small computer console next to it....

"Or, use Portal Momentum to break through with speed. We get a head-start by multiplying our speed with the portal making an infinit loop, then with good timing, shoot a portal behind us that will give us a clear shot through, we could speed through and our armor would take minimal heat damage but would take some impact damage." Derik looked around. "Or, we can create an explosive with some of the chemicals here, allowing us to destroy the emitters, as well as arm ourselves with explosive weapons as well."

Rodin looks at the cargo and thinks:  So much for blasting the stuff.  He grabs Seraphim by the arm and throws her through the door.  He starts running to it himself as fast as he can.  Rodin tries fighting through the forceful winds as best as he could.  He barely makes it through before the wind got worse.  He then says to Sera:  "Well, that was fun huh?"

(Man, Crona and MDS, you guys know your Portal!)

"Finding the right chemicals for explosives might take too long. But you're spot on with the launching idea." Ferro placed a portal on the ceiling and the floor, directly opposite one another. Then he made sure there was a clear space for placing the launching portal. "Although I'm worried about you, Alex. You don't have force-deadening boots, so your landing might be a bit sloppy. And we'll have to do it in two rounds."

Alex closed the message from Rytt. He would certainly investigate it later: a substance like that would be perfect to spend a weekend. "Don't worry about me. I'll find something to break the momentum when I hit." Alex said, looking at Ferro. "Rytt, does our armor have any shock absorbers? Be it gel or force-deadening foam?"

(I beat you to the punch. But maybe you weren't thinking of Portal at the time.)

(I beat you to the punch. But maybe you weren't thinking of Portal at the time.)

(I really wasn't. But I guess I can always have Ferro help me make one)

Sera looked right at Rodin.

"I'm torn between kissing you despite not being really interested in guys and slapping you so hard you enter orbit." She panted. "I was made for sitting in a dark room in front of a computer not being Master Chief."

(Been so busy it's ridiculous...)

"I'm sorry.  There wasn't much time to act.  I was in a rush to for wanting to save your life from being crushed."  Rodin was saying all tired.  He then says:  "So, how much farther do we have to go?"

Terry moved to the terminal, set his rifle to one side and started working the computer.

"I'm turning off the microwave systems." He told the group. "Y'all go on ahead, I can catch up."

His fingers danced across the keyboard as he navigated the control systems.

Rija nodded her understanding towards Terry, and gestured for the two others of her group to continue with her. She had managed to slice off her drone's two rifles before it ran off, and she felt like she would regret letting it live. Rija continued to the door. "Hey V, what's the probability that something will attack us as soon as this door opens?" Rija asked Veridyan sarcastically, pressing the button that activated the door.

"Hmm" Rytt thought aloud, "well the suit should compensate for about 27.43 percent of the -" Just then the buzz of the microwave corridor turned off.

"I don't believe it... " Rytt said, "It looks like one of our friends turned off the microwave. Maybe the other SA groups aren't so hostile as I thought. Keep your guard up, but in any case, you better continue on, I don't know how long the system will be off for." The door on the far side of the now-cooling hallway opened up. On the far side was a huge laboratory area. Different machines were spread out all over the room.  Chemicals has leaked in certain areas, leaving the place smelling terrible and certain corners of the lab looking dangerous.

"This is the chemicals maintenance labs," Rytt chimed in, "The cures won't be in here, we'll have to move to primary labs. While we're here, though, I'll give you guys an option. The console in the center of the lab ahead of you controls where the chemicals are routed. If you force enough of certain chemicals into specific areas of the facility you can significantly slow down our competitors. I don't want to sway you one way or the other, but it may help us quite a bit. If you don't want to do it, let' just pass through the lab and move into the Executive's Primary lab entrance, where you can access the primary lab where Genesys is. Just remember, if you don't try to slow down the other groups now, you may have to face them directly."

The hallway stood before them leading to the chemical's lab.

A single text-based message then was transmitted to each of the three holoconsole's. It was simple, and it was short.

Not everything is as it seems. Be careful who you listen to and be careful who you trust. Your enemies are closer than you know. Come to the Primary Lab. Learn the truth.

"Not much farther" Elaryse's voice came in. "From the resource bay you should be able to travel through the sorting and packaging room and then into the security sector, where the Primary lab access is. That's where Genesys will be."

The door before them both opened up, and before them was a large room with various conveyer belts, cranes, magnetic transport systems and more. There were no longer actual thing being brought down the packaging lines, just bits of garbage and scrap. The machines seemed strange as if they weren't working as intended. In a moment Seraphim was suddenly tugged into the room. She was pulled in and upward towards a magnetic crane. Her hacking upgrade and suit gave her extra magnetic resonance, which kept her firmly attached to the crane. It moved her towards a compactor at incredibly high speeds. At the same time a malfunctioning clamp crane jolted through the door and grabbed Rodin's leg and pulled him in the opposite direction, along a line towards an incinerator.

"Damn!" Elaryse seemed quite angered by these turn of events. "The machines are malfunctioning badly! I guess a few decades of no repair will do that. Seraphim, I'm giving you the access codes to the mechanical system. Hack it right now and see if you can get yourself down from there! Rodin, see if you can destroy that clamp that has you!"

Through the speed of it all and Elaryse's orders, the two probably didn't notice the text message they both received at that moment.

"Okey Dokey then" Veridyan didn't seem very phased by the groups decision. The door in front of them opened. Beyond it was a medium sized room with screens covering most of the walls. There were images on all of the screens, each one different, but none of them less than horrific.

"Welcome to the military command room of the facility." Veridyan's words felt trampled on.

There shots of planets that looked to be entirely ablaze. Shots of villages with children running through the streets suffocating or falling to the ground. Monstrous disfigurations of what once were human beings.

"Welcome to the UHC Civil War." Veridyan sighed. "This is what they did to one another. Modern technology was too quick, it didn't lower morale enough. They got creative. This is what they did for years and years and years to one another. And it never stopped. More people died, more planets were destroyed, and neither side cared."

There was a pause as the group moved into the room.

"It just kept happening, and as a top-tier SA I got to see it all. All the sick horrors they put on their fellow humans. Again, again, and again..."

Then, as the group moved into the room, it suddenly sealed. Both the door they came from, and the one on the other side of the room shut quickly. An alarm went off.

"Rebel-made SA present," a robotic voice began over the loudspeaker. "Repeat. Rebel SA is in the room. Lockdown initiated. Dispose of Rebel SA to end lockdown."

Through the red lights of the alarm the faces of each member of the group could be seen.

"This doesn't make sense..." Veridyan pondered "I'm not a rebel SA, I'm UHC. This just doesn't-"

He stopped himself.

"It can't be...." his voice returned as Henko's wrist console suddenly lit up. "You're human..." Veridyan began, then Rin's wrist console flashed "so are you..." then Rija's "and you are too..."

Then Terry's.... It flashed for a long while.

"You..." Veridyan's voice didn't have it's normal merriment in it. "You aren't a human at all. You're... you're a highly advanced Sentient Artificial in an artifical human replicant body. You... you're a rebel super computer put into a near-human body...."

The alarm flashed, the horrific pictures shone form the screens, and the group was left in the sealed room with a robotic being they thought was human.

Rija turned instantaneously. Terry was a backstabber? An SA in disguise? Rija reacted the only way she knew how, pulling out her pistol and saber, and holding them together, like a police officer would with a flashlight and a handgun. "Terry..." Irma's voice quavered slightly. She never had to kill someone she thought was her friend before. "You have 30 seconds to convince me I shouldn't hack you to pieces"

Rodin shouts:  "Will do!" as he heard Elaryse.  He looked at the clamp and thought:  Blasting the thing doesn't feel like a good idea.  I think it'd do more harm then help.  So in that case....  Rodin switched to sword mode and slashed the clamp.  His leg was free, but he fell down.  Rodin lands on an conveyer belt and thought he was safe.  He turned behind him and saw junk being thrown into the incinerator.  He says:  "Flipping fire!" and jumps off the conveyor belt.
