Though I am well aware that nothing that happens in the games of the Pokémon series applies to real life, something that apparently happens frequently in the Pokémon series bothers me; that being the fact that, after a player uses a Pokémon that is in their main party for a considerable amount of time, they replace it with a  stronger Pokémon. Personally, I hate the fact that so many people do that. It seems like a lack of consistency and loyalty to me. In my Pokémon X version, I own a Vivillon, Simisage and Meowstic as members of my main party, and even though most people would probably stop using Pokémon like that by the time they have reached my position in the game (with the ability to enter the eighth gym whenever I want), I am never going to stop using them. Along with this, in my Ruby version, I used a Surskit (which evolved into a Masquerain) throughout the game, even though it was virtually useless, its move-set was pathetic, and I did not use it at all while challenging the Elite Four.

So, why is it that many people stop using Pokémon as members of their main party simply because they are not good enough for the player?

I suppose it all depends on what the person is playing a game for.

Some play to win, some play for the story, some play just to have something to work on.

I'm starting a new run on Platinum where I only capture 6 pokemon and keep them for the whole game.

No potions during match, and I have to nickname all my pokemon.

It'll be grand.

I for one love my Mudkip ever since the day I met one from Ruby - now in every version of the game after Ruby I try to get a Swampert (that knows Ice Beam ~ my signature move) among my numbers ASAP.

I've personally found myself unable to continue pokemon X (i.e. I'm currently in the first town before the first gym) because I simply can not take a liking to the new starters. So I'm just waiting for a friend of mine to trade me a Mudkip egg once he gets one himself.

It's something called competitive battling and adding variety to the team

Sometimes people uses the Pokemon that are the most competent in battles especially the ones from the OU tier

And some people (especially Poketubers) like to change their team members from time to time so heshe and their viewers will have more variety

Personally I keep most of my team members until I beat the champion and I barely replace anyone

I can never remove Lucario or any Eeveelution from my team because I love playing with them so much

Sums up what I wanted to say.

I try to keep favorites from time to time, but if I must, I have to change teams when competitive battling. There's also wanting to change Pokemon to try out others, especially with over 700+ Pokemon.

Although there is certain Pokemon we most like to keep in our parties, even post-game. It's called HM slaves. lol

That is taking the easy way out. Using weaker Pokémon throughout the course of the game provides more challenge.

It really depends on the person's preference

If you want a real challenge...do a Nuzlocke run because it's in Nuzlocke were some weak Pokemon becomes quite useful

Nuzlocke was created in order to preserve loyalty and consistency.

For me, I dun get rid of Pokemon because they're weak, I have different uses for each Pokemon I have, excluding my main team. I have HM/TM Pokemon who exist only for that. My Pancham existed only for False Swipe, Strength, and Cut uses. My Lapras, Surf and Waterfall.

Do not get me wrong though, I treat all Pokemon that I use with love and care, but when it comes to my incomplete main team (Which will be Totodile, Shiny Mewtwo, Cyndaquil, Leafeon, Sylveon, and Luxray), I max out everything I can for them and give them the best possible moves. I will always carry them on me.

I for one uses the Pokemon that I love for single player

Raichu, for example,is a Pokemon that I'll always use since he's my favorite Electric type alongside Jolteon.

In Showdown I sometimes try to win with Pokemon that no one uses like Clefable and Vileplume(I mean.....NUPTUP)

And yess while Blaziken is great I prefer Lucario
