Actually, that was a misconception. According to someone who read the novel--and can speak both English and Japanese--people were mistaking Yuna's being coy and playful as her being mean. Anyway...

I said that I'M the one pretending they never happened. In my mind, nothing happened after X. That way, the storyline's actually good.

Same here, that's why I don't consider anything past X as canon.

And then they make Yuna a doormat again, Tidus an immature asshole again, and it's like Final Fantasy X or its character development never even existed. I know the story.
