What's the strange souvenir for? Pokemon xy

This backpacker in the camphrier town hotel gave me a "strange souvenir" so my question is what is it? What does it do? Is it important in anyway later on?

    It's for pure speculation. I'm sure game freak just had him give that to you to give you a clue as to what the region he comes from is. I'm guessing there gonna reveal what it is when the new region is revealed but for now it's our job the speculate. xD

    I haven't obtained it yet, but for all we know, it apparently represents a Pokemon in a foreign region we've yet to discover.
