Do long running shonen animes have to be that long?

Posted

I was watching a couple of anime reviews from GRArkada(an awesome anime reviewer btw) and suddenly I found this interesting podcast

and it kinda made me question:Does a shonen anime really needs to be this long?or at least as unbelievably long as the big three(or big four if you count HunterXHunter the 2011 version now)?

Don't get me wrong I love shonen it's my favorite genre in anime but some can be ridiculously long that I sometimes can't keep up with anymore especially when so many episodes of said long running series can be pure filler

One Piece as far as I know has over 700 episodes and it's still going and so does Naruto

(I would've counted DBZ but DBZ ended a looong time ago and DBZ Kai cut almost all the fillers and get to the action)

Sure some animes managed to do it right but most of the time it ends up turning a series into a quality rollercoaster where it suddenly becomes insanely good, but a couple of episodes later it becomes really really bad and this cycle keeps repeating until some fans might end up falling from said series and look up another anime instead

I stopped watching Detective Conan after almost 350 episodes(I know that show goes by case of the week formua but still),I lost track of One Piece after episode 100 and I fell out of Naruto in the middle of the fourth Ninja war

I don't mind a Shonen series being long heck Hunter X Hunter 2011 reached episode 131 last week and I still love it.It just they gotta have a consistent stream of quality in order to keep me interested. And for the love of God SLOW DOWN THE FREAKIN FILLERS!!!Seriously I hate when a series suddenly shift into 50 episode arc filled with pure filler(Looking at you Bleach).

Dragon Ball Z has like 293 episodes. And I think that's too long as it is which is one of the reasons I prefer Z Kai.

And I agree about One Piece. I stopped at about 195. Mainly because Funimation stopped dubbing it for awhile but also because it was so long.

I actually dislike really long anime. It's one of the main reasons i've avoided the big three all this time. The plot and stuff are probably good, but there's so many useless filler episodes it gets annoying

You could skip the fillers xD

Except the ones that have plot elements in it, those are the worst :/

Long animes can be boring sometimes, but as long as they keep the content and the story fresh, I don't mind xD

They seem bad now but when they end you can run through them pretty quick. Some series could go forever like DBZ cause I could watch that forever if done right which is why I watch this amazing fan-made series called Dragon Ball Absalon

If the series ended like DBZ then yeah but when it's still running you're gonna wait for weeks upon weeks and by the time the fillers end you won't notice that you've actually skipped actual main episodes along the filler

That happened with me a lot and the worst case of it were the 50 episode filler arcs in both Naruto and Bleach

Those are the worst offenders, but there are anime websites that tell you when there are fillers/canon going on.

But hey, at least the recent Naruto fillers weren't so bad xD

Maybe but because they were long I lost track man especially when you're watching other animes alongside it

And the worst part about it is,in Naruto Shippuden they took unaired episodes from the original Naruto(musics, old animations and all) and aired them in what has to be the laziest way to do a filler...WHO THE HELL CARES ABOUT THE TALKING OSTRICH THAT FOR SOME REASON CAN DO JUTSUS!!

But hey at least this isn't as bad as Bleach.....oh my God that filler was the worst way to do a filler I've ever seen in any anime,,,period. It just what made me hate Bleach and ditch the series as soon as I got to the halfway point

Or flashback filler episode urgh

I really don't care if it's a really long Manga or Anime. Like Dragon Ball Z for example, I love Dragon Ball Z and I enjoy every minute of it, and yes I love watching both main episodes and filler episodes. As a matter of fact I love watching both Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. If the Manga and Anime has a good story line than I don't care if it's long. I'm a type of person who likes long series, because I hate it when good Anime has like 12 or 13 episodes, I would've prefer if the Anime has 24 episodes.

Then read the manga, you silly goose.

1the manga is long too and sometimes even certain chapters can be fillers(like Buu Vs the candy in DBZ's buu saga)

2It's more exciting to see it in anime form especially when great composers like Yuki Kajura are hired to compose the soundtrack of an anime, and a great studiocompany like Madhouse who're being known for their high quality animations

That was an entire episode, while the manga counterpart was settled before the end of the chapter it was featured in. Bad example.

Well if its so exciting, then why are you complaining?

uhh here we go again

Yes it's exciting to see it in anime form. What's not exciting though is a 50 episode arc filled with nothing but filler episodes, literally an entire arc of Bleach was just a filler of 50 episodes

and in Naruto Shippuden's case, after Pain's death there is an almost 50 episode arc that's just pure filler formed of unaired episodes of the original(heck even the same music and old animations of the original),recap of things we've just seen and some other pointless stuff.

in DBZ's case sure that was one episode but it was a filler regardless of it being in the manga or not and I can site other examples of pointless fillers in DBZ like the fake Namek episodes

Well now you're just complaining about filler. And I once again direct you to read manga good sir.

If you read my initial post I mentioned both fillers and a series dragging itself way too long than it should

When you have a series that is over 700 episodes that will result in a quality rollercoaster in which sometimes it can be really good, other times it can be really really bad and the cycle repeats itself....hence why DBZ should've ended in the Cell Saga cuz starting from the Buu saga, everything goes downhill until it hit the bottom with the fight against Super 17 in GT

Again I don't mind a series being long heck HunterXHunter(the 2011 version) has reached  131 episodes recently and I still love it a lot,as long as it keeps on delivering a consistent stream of quality in terms of writing

No good DragonBall fan counts GT as canon to the series, first off. Get that shit out of here.

Second, you just told me that the current arc of HxH was sucking right now. Thirdly, I don't see the point of your argument anymore to be honest. If its too long for you, then don't watch or at least pace yourself. If you don't like filler, then skip the filler, or at least learn to enjoy some of it because filler isn't as bad as most people say it to be. Hell, sometimes it adds to canon. And If you really don't want to put with any of it, then reeeeeeead the manga.

That was 10 episodes ago when I said the arc sucked, but it improved and kept on improving until it reached a very high point in the series with episode 131

Secondly, you might not see the point ,but others around the anime community do...hence why I posted the Podtaku podcast in my initial post.

Thirdly,I enjoy a filler when it's actually good, whether it being hilarious like that episode in Naruto Shippuden where his shadow clones rebels against him,or taking a break to expand on the story of another character

But that rarely happens and most of the time the fillers are just there to get some extra money to fund the making of the actual episodes which most of the time has more animations.

Fourthly,I read a manga if Ait's way ahead of the anime to a ridiculous degree or BThere is no anime form of it like the Pokemon Adventure manga

They make fillers because most of the time, the anime in question needs time to space itself from the manga. Most long running shonen anime series are adapted from a manga and henceforth need to stay a good amount of content's worth away from the amount of content being produced in the manga due to production, distribution, and overall not letting the adaption get farther ahead from the original product. Oh yeah, and spoilers too.

And you really don't read manga other than those two reasons? I suggest you change that mindset and start reading manga just for the sake of reading manga. Also because some of the original manga are tons better than some of these anime (i.e Fullmetal Alchemist, Soul Eater, Blue Exorcist, Deadman Wonderland, etc)
